Economy Trump's April 2nd Tariffs

Ludicrous.

People are more than justified at sounding alarms when their investments are tanking and the global economy is collapsing because of one man’s purposeful actions.

What shall we do next time some asshole purposely engineers a hemorrhaging of the market—smile and say”please sir may I have another”?

Yeah global pandemic vs self inflicted bad policy is exactly the same thing. That's a very honest take.
Lmao okay Q1 & Q2 2022 -1.6 & -.9.

Back then “not a recession”.

Now 2 quarters in a row is back to being a recession. Who gives a shit about the cause.

Two quarters in a row was always a recession.

Sounding alarms is different than thinking the world is collapsing.

I live in hope!

Trump appeals to many people. There's a lot of people who feel left behind by the system, who watch their opportunities become less than the previous generation and see their country changing into something that is less recognisable than before. It happens in my country, too. Affordability is dropping, and the prospect of home ownership is rapidly diminishing for this current generation.

Trump has an astonishing ability to appeal to these people who are disenfranchised. He bucks the system. He gives simple answers. He directs their anger onto targets, in a world that's very complex and doesn't have an easy target.

Sometimes, I think those people are fucking idiots. But I live in hope that they'll see through Trump at some stage and realise his so called simple answers are just bullying appeals to ignorance. It pains me to see the worlds richest country with the worlds largest military paint itself the victim so it justifies lashing out on others. If Americans feel poor in their own country - the richest in the world - it is a problem the country has created itself with inequality.

You do realize America has done this before and this playbook is not new. Bush 2 did a different but similar version when he was President and it worked. He played kind of the dumb guy to appeal to Repub and lower class voters despite the fact that he went to Harvard and was Governor of Texas before he became President. I look at Conservatives/Republicans as having Stockholm Syndrome more so than any other political group (although it does happen with other political groups).

Conservatives/Repubs are always told to believe in the market. Working hard will get you what you want and that less government intervention, regulation and taxes are always a good thing. Those same Conservatives/Repubs in power will generally always vote for more money for war, more tax cuts and more for security when it is against the interest of the lower base of the party. However, the lower base of the party will sympathize more so than any other base with the powers that be against their interest. For example, groups on Social Security vote for Repubs by in large more than other groups and yet Repubs are the same group trying to dismantle Social Security.

Real gross domestic product (GDP) decreased at an annual rate of 0.3 percent in the first quarter of 2025 (January, February, and March), according to the advance estimate released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the fourth quarter of 2024, real GDP increased 2.4 percent.

they think the tariff is one of the reasons why

I'm surprised they don't blame Biden and Obama and Hillary's emails.

You’re just being pedantic.
No one literally thought it was the end of the world. They were sounding alarms that markets were collapsing and it could be devastating without a change of action.

OK, I'll accept we had a misunderstanding.

I only "defend" tariffs because the majority of people here talk out their ass acting like they have knowledge of how it works when they clearly don't. (not trying to say I do, but I've sat back and watched basically no predictions from the naysayers come to fruition). Honestly, they appear to be working to me. China has dropped some tariffs, countries are lining up to negotiate with us. This is good for America.

I "defend tariffs" because of what I'm seeing and thats nations wanting to deal with us vs telling us to fuck off. I'm tired of hearing how having trade deficits with everyone is actually a great thing, while also being obligated to spend billions on their defense and other foreign aid. II heard nothing but apocalyptic predictions when the stock market had ,what, 3 bad days? Yet nothing about the massive bounce back just days later and last I looked, the stock market is booming.

And lastly, I "defend" tariffs because I have yet to see any explanation of why everyone does it but when the US does, we're evil and destroying the world. I've seen some pretty lame attempts to explain it but none that make any sense. China actually has the balls to ask us not to tariff them the same way they do us. Why are our exports tariff'd to the point of our products being uncompetitive and we can't do the same?

The world has taken the USA for granted and worse, the leadership of this country has advertised us as such to the world for too long. We prop the rest of the world up at our own detriment. We get raped on trade, lost all of our manufacturing to countries who don't follow the rules of "fair trade", and then foot the bill for your military defense as well. All for a bunch of assholes who don't even like us, the same people crying doom. Enough is enough. We're tired of being the Salvation Army to the world.
If Biden had this kind of self-inflicted unforced disaster of an economic policy you and the other weirdos would be screaming about it nonstop. Its really sad to see such pathetic creatures with no spine.

Two quarters in a row was always a recession.

I think the cause if kind of important if you want to be honest.

Two similar things are not the same thing. It's not that complicated.

This is clearly self inflicted and the result of bad policy.

Because of how evil he is it can be easy to overlook how stupid Trump is as well. Creating a recession out of thin air because none of his sycophantic lap dogs had the courage to explain tariffs to him is just remarkable stuff.

It's laughable to argue otherwise, yet here we are.

Not really what I said. No one "likes" the idea of these tariffs, some feel they are kind of necessary and some are more worried about how it'll affect foreign nations than ourselves.

Lets be real, 99.999% of the outrage is partisan BS.

Only partisan hacks think this tariff foolishness is anything other than the biggest economic blunder in history.

Thanks professor. I'll wait and see what actually happens, just to be sure. Forgive me for not taking your word for it.

I mean, we don't have to wait and see, it's happening in real time. Consumer confidence is down, prices are up, imports and exports are down, GDP growth is down, the stock market is schizophrenic.
