Economy Trump's April 2nd Tariffs

Here's an explainer for the method behind calculating the tariffs

It has been described as both "crude" and "6th grade maths"

One thing is clear - there is nothing reciprocal about them

The tariff chart Trump presented was very obviously misleading even on the quickest of glances but it was clearly even dumber than I initially thought. It's mind-boggling how stupid that calculation is. Even though Trump is in the position where he can keep making even obvious lies about anything and still have his voters back him up on it things just keep surprising me in how low it can go. I now fondly look back to when I just had to shake my head and laugh at the statement that trade deficits are really bad.

This is just a declaration of trade war so the only response is to return it in kind. It will be a terrible economic time but there's still much more downside to giving in to an aggressor like that.

what really gonna happen isn't bringing down the deficit and bringing manufacturing jobs back to America.
it's going to bring other countries together and trade without the US.
Isolate yourself from the world stage and destroy US soft power in this one trick

It'll be interesting to see how the world reacts.

Yes, historically a country targeted by tariffs would return in kind.

But this might just be too stupid. To follow suit makes them equally retarded.

Giving into bullies rarely works well, it will just make them more likely to keep doing things like that in the future. It's like when people said that Russia won't do anything more to Ukraine after Crimea as they now got what they wanted.

I think the right course of action is to respond in kind (intelligently so though, not being the one who escalates) and also seek new markets. The EU is actively negotiating trade deals in big markets in Asia and will certainly aim to keep or increase good relationships with current partners that don't act like the US. I'm sure other players seek to do similar things, or at least increase trade with the stable trading partners you already have.

Few things will be so big as to keep a status quo from the US now becoming an unreliable trading partner and market but that is what you can do. The small benefit of the US acting this way is that it's probably easier for others to get trade new deals elsewhere when they can come off as much more reliable and predictable compared to the US.

Even if it does bring manufacturing jobs back to America, how many Americans are looking for minimum wage manufacturing jobs?

Imagine if they have to bring in a load of immigrants to do the jobs.

The children yearn for the mines, I mean manufacturing jobs.

I wonder how much of an impact the resulting US products unofficial boycotts will have in the long term. Pissing off the entire world is very shortsighted. You already see it here, people buying more goods from Canada, and Mexico and less from the US. Extrapolate that trend to every country that Trump is pissing off and it will hurt the US economy even worse.

Maybe Trump is trying to get his voter base laid off so they can sign up to work in a factory assembly line.

he's waffled so much it's clear he doesn't have an actual plan, "carrot or stick" is simply the only way he knows how to "negotiate."

they wouldn't even have those shitty labor jobs. most manufactory jobs will be replaced by machines.
with how the robots are developed these days you need like 5 people altogether to run a factory

Donald is barking up the wrong tree here and has went the wrong way at firing shots at nations across the globe.

Hate to say it but you guys are freaking cooked with a direct tariff war v the rest of the world, and isolating your greatest allies. This is absolute peak lunacy.

I think if Donald doesn’t strike some kind of deals or reverses courses you guys are fucked. Isolation is a dangerous tactic. Yikes!
