Economy Trump's April 2nd Tariffs

did they, though? for example the EU as far as I can find tariffed US goods on average by 1-3% before Trump's term which was met at a similar 1-3% average by the US, nothing like the 39% figure he justified his 20% tariff with, though EU countries also apply a VAT to both imports and local products
(WTO says 1% for both and grok 2-3%, loathe to use AI but at least it should be fair to the Trump point of view)

They separate VAT from sales tax? Interesting, thought they lumped it into one thing

How exactly is that fair?
Because every country has different supply and demand and circumstances, not to mention some domestic markets are more critical than others. IE lots of developing countries block agricultural exports because it would put out of work huge swathes of the population, whereas the US doesn't rely on the sector the same way. Similarly, a lot of countries can't afford the subsidies the US provides farmers, hence tariffs again.

Being I've only been a citizen for a little over a year I don't like feeling this way having a modicum of sense, I wish I could bury my head in the sand like the morons hanging on his every word.

you should probably get out of there before you end up in a concentration camp in el salvador never to be heard from again.

I know many of them voted for him but I'm sad for the farmers here who relied on USAID for their income which they're no longer getting. They likely relied on income from food banks which he cut last week as well.

I feel a little less bad big picture since agricultural subsidies aren't good and crowd out other funding. But yes, there are going to be a lot of sad farmers after the budget cuts are done.

Under his rule I was constantly pulled into a separate room and questioned quite extensively so I'm not planning air travel in the near future. Sounds drastic but if it used to happen heaps before it's not really under the realms of possibility that it could be worse than before.

It's just cruel. The USAID trucks in Houston had already been reconciled financially so they were literally just there to rot. The same with $2 million last week for the food bank trucks he cancelled, they were already loaded.

Why are there people not understanding this? It's very basic economics. Him pretending it'll bring more factories making everything in America is a false economy. It's not going to happen even in his lifetime and in 4 years Dems will get back in and reverse it again.

It's the Carrier Air Conditioner or Foxconn situation all over again. These guys will show boat saving American jobs or bringing big 10 billion dollar investments into the country but we know the end results

Vietnam
Laos
And Cambodia
You guys need to fuck off with the 90% tariffs full disclosure.
We didn’t need an act of congress last time fuckers.

Ooh they're new ones on me.

I wished I believed in a hell so I could picture that orange bastard down there. I can only hope for a long, painful drawn-out illness.

I can't bring myself to say the words but I'm with you. I didn't think I was capable of the dark thoughts I've wished upon him.

I see one wrong number and I assume most of the numbers are bogus. New Zealand has gone pretty maximally free trade, sometimes to our own detriment. A lot of stuff comes in tariff free, and the average tariff on US goods is less than 2%, yet somehow he is claiming that we impose a 20% tariff on US Goods. We likely won't retaliate as a trade war with a superpower isn't in our interest, but this is just dumb, incredibly stupid relations. We are already turning to China as our biggest export partner, and this pushes us harder in that direction.
