Economy Trump's April 2nd Tariffs

Revenue from customs duties spiked more than 60% in April as the first of President Donald Trump’s fresh tariffs took effect, bringing in at least $15 billion, according to Treasury data released Wednesday.

$10 trillion lost globally
$4-$5 trillion lost on US stock market
$1.5 trillion lost in US tech sector alone

A spike in customs duties!

Thats great news for the masses!

I'm just posting the story, tariffs are bringing in revenue. I was told repeatedly that thats not how tariffs work by people who watched Ferris Bueller.

Is that what you heard; or did you hear the damage from them outweighs benefits for Americans?

If so, there is little doubt that some revenue may be generated, Americans have to pay higher taxes to import.

The alarm (from economist) is the clear impact it has on the American (and global ) economy

‘Monstrously Destructive’ and ‘Unwise’: Leading Economists React to Trump’s Tariffs

I think thats what homie is trying to say.

I gather people who are in support of this action dont know who is paying for these tariffs ...

<{Joewithit}>

A huge increase in taxes are cool with Republicans as long as their best buddy billionaires aren't the ones paying it. That's just not fair.

Who do you think is paying the duties on those tariffs?
Thats not the point, really. Tariffs create government revenue. Why should the government allow us to be undercut by countries like China with no return? If we're going to lose to China we may as well create government revenue. Why do you think literally everything we export is tariff'd?

The effect on the consumer is a different story. Not insignificant but not what this is about.

"We should pay more taxes to increase government revenue to make up for being undercut by countries like China" makes no sense.

Even as a non-right leaning, non-American, that is pure steaming horseshit, bud, and it's about as un-Republican as you could possibly get.

It is pro-oligarch, though.

What do you think is gonna be done with "government revenue"? A better healthcare system? Better student loan programs? A better VA for our veterans?

Oh no, because that'd be socialism right?

What benefits to US citizens will there be? Are there any big plans to offset this cost to consumers by drastically lowering taxes for the middle and lower classes? No?

Then by that metric, all those taxes we could be levying on the rich is all missed revenue.

You can't just rephrase a tax as revenue and then blindly give it the thumbs up. This "revenue" is money that AMERICANS are paying for goods that they otherwise didn't pay before Trump. If you really wanted to view this as "revenue," you'd also be wise to take into account the loss in value by having to pay more to make anything here.

Now take a look at the stock market. Are we losing money, or gaining money? Now can you see why it's stupid to try can classify a $10-trillion dollar loss and an increase in revenue?

I can't say. No idea. I just posted a story. You guys got upset. I feel my obligation is over.

I mean, I guess ideally it'd go to lowering taxes, which is what Trump has suggested. What will happen with it? I don't know.

So why does everyone do it to us?

Because, at the heart of the matter, they are not as rich or successful as the US.

Tariffs are for countries with fewer industries and less economic might.

Every country that isn't China or the US should tariff China and the US so they can't just dump their shit at prices that undercut native industry. I've done this a million times already this calendar year, but the UK steel industry is on it's knees because the government allows bigger, wealthier countries to offer us dirt cheap steel that they produce at a massive surplus. China have been doing this, and then guess what? They bought British steel and ran it into the ground.

Fuck that.

Tariffs are about protecting yourself from a carnivore economy, but even then they need to be targeted at specific industries and specific products because sometimes importing on the cheap is better than producing on home soil.

What's not to get by now? How can't you understand it?

This doesn't explain why you claim it works for everyone but the USA. Literally every country benefits from tariffs.
So what do you mean? They're punishing their own people according to you. Why would they do this? If they're not as rich as us, they're double fucking their people. How could this be?
Tariffs do two things. They make imports less competitive and they create revenue for the government if people insist on buying it anyway.

I don't think you and others really understand it as well as you tell each other you do. You all talk in circles on this issue.
