The EU wants to make sure Ukraine is defended and that one does not set a precedent that Russia can just invade a sovereign European nation and then negotiate a peace which is advantageous to them, because that will encourage Kreml to continue this modus operandi in the future.

Is that hard to understand?

Maybe these same EU "leaders" should have done a better job of protecting their own borders then. It wouldn't have set off the message that we were ripe for the taking.

Ukraine is not in the EU, but yes- they certainly should have done more. The pendulum is definitely swinging in that direction now though, the military investments will be significant in the years to come.
