I suspect that in the moment he makes any given statement, any contrary facts which he may know, or may ever have known, are so entirely overpowered by his ego's desperate need to make whatever point he wishes to make at that exact moment in time, for whatever reasons are motivating him at that point in time, that his ego will entirely efface those contrary facts from his memory.

I think his ego is incredibly efficient at erasing any unpleasant or inconvenient facts, or thoughts, exactly because of its very vulnerability, desperation for approval, and the deep-lying knowledge of inadequacy that drives them.

A lot of the time, I'm not sure he is even consciously lying in terms of stating things to the contrary of what he consciously knows (I suspect his low IQ and at-best failing/ at worst dementia-affected mental powers are wonderful crutches to his ego, in that sense, poor factual recall and ability in inductive reasoning are great for someone trying to convince themselves of their own worth contrary to evidence)
