You will not be able to protect America by protecting its people from information. You can only protect them by making them even more knowledgeable about the political process, to the point where they will not be surprised or outraged by being exposed to such information. Educating people to be capable of critically evaluating the material that they read, and to have a more complex understanding of the nature of politics, is surely a taller task than sanctioning Vladimir Putin and setting the CIA loose to fight a War on the Web, but it is the only solution which yields long-term rewards.

Your argument is very idealistic. There is a distinction between private/public (which also includes domestic/international) and we still live in a world where that framework is necessary since friends and enemies compose the world. Transparency is not inherently a bad thing and I agree that the American population in particular requires more education on matters other than business, but what occurred during the election because of Russian meddling was a shock and its consequences are not positive for American society right now. It is not clear yet what the long-term consequences are. If you want to argue about transparency, I am all for it, but clear sources and their agendas for releasing information are important when civilians interpret data and its usefulness, especially during election time. I'm not budging from that position, especially in regards to national security.
