(CNN)President Donald Trump had a golden opportunity on Monday to stare down Russian President Vladimir Putin and tell him, in no uncertain terms, that Russia's meddling in the 2016 election was totally unacceptable, and that if anything like it continued going forward, there would be major and serious penalties to pay.

Instead, standing next to Putin at the US-Russia summit in Helsinki, Trump did the opposite.
"I hold both countries responsible," Trump said in response to a question from the American press about Russia's interference. "I think that the United States has been foolish. We've all been foolish. We're all to blame." He went on to deride the FBI, special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, the US intelligence community,

Make no mistake what happened in Finland on Monday: An American President -- contrary to the unanimous findings of his intelligence community and the Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee -- sought to split blame with a foreign adversary who actively interfered in an American election to help him and hurt his opponent. And he did so while standing next to the Russian President -- a man who heads a country that not only sought to sway the 2016 election through interference but also invaded and annexed Crimea and allegedly poisoned a former Russian spy and his daughter on British soil.
It was the most stunning moment yet of a presidency filled with them. (On a domestic scale, his "both sides" response to the racially motivated violence in Charlottesville was equally stunning, but Monday's summit sets a new bar for the global implications of Trump's actions.) Not only has Trump actively worked to realign geopolitics with his attacks on the European Union and NATO but, as of Monday, he made clear that he trusts Putin at least as much -- and maybe more -- than his own intelligence officials.

Trump has called the FBI liars.

He has said Putin is more trustworthy.

The FBI has no one but themselves to blame if they look less than stellar right now.
Being a patriot means just going along with whatever our checkered - historied alphabet agencies tell us?
That sounds like the opposite of patriotism to me.

They would never lie to the American people, would they, no of course not, and they always put our interests first, right?
History tells us otherwise.

Not sure what you're saying. Are you suggesting that Russia wasn't behind the hacks? That Manafort didn't run Trump's campaign? That the meeting didn't happen? Put aside your partisan preferences, and just look at the evidence. Very obviously, there was a lot of interference from Russia in the process, and many people in the Trump campaign were aware of it (note that he was even warned that they'd try to infiltrate his campaign--back when it was just assumed that any presidential candidate would care about that).



See, this is a dumb personal attack (and again note that you're playing the victim while initiating personal attacks). When you say stuff that is demonstrably false, I say that you're saying stuff that is false. I don't care about agreement or disagreement on matters of opinion, but let's make an effort to get the facts right and to discuss issues honestly.

What’s your take on Obama saying (before the result) that worrying about the election being tampered with was silly “whining”?
 
So trump went to uk dissed May, said she is doing bad job and Boris would be great PM. Then his people big up Tommy Robinson. Then he goes to Russia and act like a puppy infront of putin, compliments him. But doesnt say a puppy single bad word of Russia and his people dont mention any opposition treated bad. I love how trump fans pretend this is normal

I'd say there is more evidence for my theory than your Russia collusion nonsense.

What’s in it for the FBI to lie?

There’s certainly a logical explanation as to what’s in it for Trump;

Pee tape jokes distract from the real issues;

Trump is a business who was faced with ruin several times, he has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy several times.

It was nearly impossible for him to get a business loan in the US plus he was faced with financial hardship.

Not hard to imagine a guy like that would turn to a bunch of nefarious Russian bankers that could still ruin him.

The motive for Putin is obvious.

I fail to see the motive in various intelligence agencies conspiring on this issue? Do you have a credible motive you can put forward?
