Elections Trump is rigging the Republican primary, by not having one

It helps if you think of the Republican Party as another Trump brand like a hotel chain or steaks. He owns it so he gets to decide how it operates and what it looks like.

Get a grip dude

How does the incumbent face challengers from the same party?

That's a legitimate question, I really don't know.

I'm not entirely familiar with the subject, but I think this is not really that unusual. It looks like in 2012, VA, CT, DE and NY all cancelled their Democratic primaries (Wiki).

It would be an interesting comparison to see what has happened in the past and what is happening in this election.

Hillary wasn't the incumbent in 2016, though, so I don't think the situations are comparable.

Please excuse my ignorance and show me when an incumbent president actually faced a serious primary challenge?
Reagan made a run at Ford, as the most recent serious challenge back in '76. Robert Kennedy waffle-stomped LBJ in '68, at least until...that thing that happened to him.

And yet no explanation as to how Trump is rigging the Republican primary. Just another shameful unsupported assertion.

He has an avatar bet with a certain ruthless poster. He bet Trump wouldn't run in 2020.

Brah, I'm untouchable.

Even if I lose, which seems likely, what are you going to give me that would make me bat an eye?

I don't even hate Trump.

You going to give me a Dick Cheney avatar?

I still wouldn't care. It's a avatar.

I am un-trigger-able.

I don't see a problem there. Ultimately, I think it is and should be the party's decision how they want to steer their nomination process.

The much bigger problem imo is that the presidential election cannot be separated from the two-party system you have.

They are rigging the election for Trump. He does not need hard fought wins in various states exposes his weaknesses. These states know he will have a bitter reaction.

Remember those 2012 democrat primaries? Whew, Obama was sweatin’ It.....

Trump should not even campaign or debate, just own this thing like the rock star he is.

We want Trump's red flag laws, bump stock bans, and gun grabbing?

He seems scared to stand on the stage with a actual libertarian.

I mean...

This is a primary not an election. While I agree it's kind of shitty I believe it is the Alaska GOP's right to nominate who they want. The major difference between this and Hilary stealing her party's nomination is she tried to give the appearance of a primary when the reality is the Democrats are corrupt as hell.

I thought only under extreme circumstances does a sitting president have to go out and primary. Thought the party just selected him. Is this not the usual case? I'm actually curious. Did Obama have to primary to get the DNC? Or did they just electronic him and he campaigned against Mitt?

Funny how republicans love trump and he made a mockery of their long storied party. How hilarious.

How does the incumbent face challengers from the same party?

It happens and it isnt good for the party. Reagan in '76, Ted Kennedy in '80 and Buchanan in '92 all ended with the incumbent losing the general. Though not likely the only reason they lost....

Johnson had pulled out before reentering not really the same like in '80

I'm talking about how he is rigging the Republican primary.

If he is such a lock, then why not actually have the debates, and primaries?

Sounds allot like Hillary is invetible to me.

I understand your frustration, but I dont think there would be any debates regardless - I dont remember any for Carter when Kennedy challenged him nor any for H.W. Bush when Buchanan challeged.
