I’ll chime in and say that I think a few things have been at work for awhile here. A big one is getting conservatives at large to trust a few media outlets and distrust any information or data that doesn’t come from an approved, conservative source. It’s to the point where it’s nearly impossible to have a debate or conversation with them as they live in a totally different, low-information reality.

I think a second aspect is how large the fundamentalist Christian movement has gotten and how much it’s influenced Republican politics. These are people who rigid by nature, and pretty blindly follow dogmas provided to them.

Jack Smith’s wasn’t even made Special Counsel until Nov 2022. Considering he was taking over 2 complicated pre-existing investigations (classified docs and Jan 6), he actually moved very quickly and efficiently.

So now we continue with a political tale as old as time: Trump will get away free while everyone around him goes down just like Nixon and Reagan did.

The DOJ has a longstanding policy of not prosecuting a sitting POTUS, and obviously Trump’s loyalist DOJ never would anyway. These charges aren’t being dismissed because they “aren’t useful,” they’re being dismissed because it’s literally impossible to prosecute him for the next 4 years.

He ran for POTUS so he could be shielded from prosecution, could use the vast powers of the presidency (“Now With Sparkling Fresh IMMUNITY!”) to punish his perceived enemies—and of course, enrich himself and his cronies if he can. Trump has been in the public eye longer than I’ve been alive, and one thing is clear: he has never, ever, give a fuck about anybody but himself.

As for jail, who knows. Seems like a longshot that a POTUS would do jail/prison time, but anyone else who did what he did sure would.

Jack Smith asked for the cases to be dismissed without prejudice (and they were), so they could theoretically be re-filed. As for his reasons, he listed them right in his court filing, all related to not being able to prosecute a sitting POTUS.

But let’s be real here: if Smith hadn’t dropped the charges, he’d have been bounced as Spec Counsel once Trump’s DOJ took over, the charges would still be dismissed, possibly with prejudice so they couldn’t be re-filed. But in 4 years, Trump will be 82, there was still probably a several years worth of legal wrangling, trials, appeals…. this is almost certainly over as far as Trump is concerned.

Despite a multi-state felony scheme to disenfranchise millions of voters, purposely stealing, lying about, and obstructing the theft of boxes of classified docs, despite inciting an insurrection, that fucker successfully manipulated and convinced enough people to put him right back in power where he’s shielded.
