I wish I had a better understanding of the handling and tracking of classified documents.

Surely the most sensitive documents are registered and there's a way of telling exactly who has what.

A lot of people are saying this is a systemic problem and the executive branch has historically been very careless. Is this true, and can it be fixed?

I appreciate that it's Trump's failure to comply that has gotten him into his current issues, but why was he allowed to be in that position in the first place?

Also, the President has wide discretion with regards to declassification. Why? What purpose does that serve?

Barr took the opportunity to whisper sweet nothings into Trump's ear to gain one of the most powerful positions in government. He's definitely too smart to be a loyal MAGAhatter sycophant. He was looking to push his own agenda and doesn't feel the need to defend Trump now that the fruit no longer has any juice.

He's doing sorry ass whataboutisms to distract from the fact that his fearless leader is facing 400 years in federal prison when he is convicted. Then of course there are the dozens of charges he's facing in New York not to mention the charges he's gonna be facing in Georgia in a few months.

Barr is more closely aligned with the Federalist Society/Heritage Foundation kind of goons who want politics to only be accessible to the wealthy again. These guys eventually warmed to Trump because he IS the wealthy, or at least representative thereof. Imagine how hard politicians would sh*t their pants if the donor class actually did want to run for office. Theyd be treated just like the rest of the working class and suddenly every last one of them would be populists. Trump was just a grifter who realized he could fleece an entire political system by pretending to be a member of that class who was actually interested in leading. That's why his base worship him so much, they worship greedy braggadicous billionaires and he was one who captured the Presidency. Then once he was in all the real right wing idealogs realized he was dangerous enough to f*ck up all their plans, or at least he could never keep quiet enough to prevent the working class from finding out about them. Hence them getting embarrassed in the midterms

He apparently wrote in his book that he and Trump were at odds soon after he arrived. And that he, the righteous conscious republican, tried to be the voice of reason

I don't know who to believe, but I'm not surprised at any parthian shot he takes at trump now

Because he is the Executive Branch. All of the other people in the executive branch essentially exist as extensions of his will. And that means he can alter anything that another part of the executive branch created. As Commander-in-Chief this includes a lot of things related to the military.

Given the separation of powers between the branches, it wouldn't make sense to require the Executive branch to get permission from the Legislative branch (Congress) or the Judicial branch (SCOTUS) in order to read it's own records.

The problem is that we've always assumed that the person in that position would be responsible and patriotic. Handing all of that power to an irresponsible narcissist is how you get highly classified documents stored in a bathroom like toilet paper and shown to random people to boost the man's ego at the expense of national security.

Of course, the bigger problem is how we can have a sizeable portion of the population excusing this insanity.
