I agree and think we could benefit greatly from scientists helping make decisions. But they would be terrible at campaigning, raising money, etc.. Good political leaders surround themselves with good advisers, which include scientists.

It's a different skill, anyway. Look at something like climate change. A climate scientist can tell you, yeah, the planet is getting warmer because of human activity, and there are a lot of bad consequences to that. OK. So what do we do about it? Reduce carbon emissions. How? Maybe an economist will then tell you that the best way is to change incentives by taxing carbon. Now there are majorities in both houses of Congress that are committed to never raising any taxes so what do you do? Oil companies will fund an ad campaign against you and think tanks to produce studies, which then get repeated in opeds, saying that your tax is going to destroy the economy. Leftist groups will say that your tax is regressive and will hurt the poor or that you're a sellout who is going in for half measures (why not ban emissions?), and they oppose you. Etc. A scientist, no matter how good, is not necessarily going to be able to figure out how to navigate through all that to get any helpful policy done. And that's just one issue, on which almost all scientists agree--that is, a relatively easy one.

Well put. This is basically the better worded point I was making.

Thanks. I think a lot of people (like Ultra or Hendo or any Tea Partier) don't understand that there is widespread disagreement about what our problems are and how to handle them and don't appreciate that our system is designed to change slowly. There's a sense that all of our problems are obvious and have obvious solutions that only fail to happen because politicians are corrupt.

It's even worse with foreign policy. I was trying to pin Anung down once, and it was comical. In any situation, there is a downside. Something bad is happening where we might feel some responsibility. What do we do? Nothing? There's a lot of blood on your hands. Sanctions? Ditto. Invade? Ditto. Airstrikes? Ditto. There's no option that is free of downside so if someone isn't thinking deeply or willing to offer and defend an alternative, any policy at all can look bad.

Listen, a lot of people come up to me and ask this question. They say "Trump, Why did you retweet Pepe?" It's great, everyone wants to know why I retweeted it. And you know what I tell them? I tell them I understand the young people. The young people love me. Look, I have friends, many many friends, who are millennials. They're very successful entrepreneurs, the finest people, but you know, times are tough. This President has no respect for the people in this country. It's a mess, it's a total mess. The system is rigged folks. But I'm telling you, no one is better at fixing the economy than me. We're going to bring the American dream back, that I can tell you. That I can tell you.

You make it sound like politicians are doing a better job at it... not sure I agree.

Well said. I think there are too many idealists today blinded by their righteous indignation.

So three out of your four examples are objectively false claims (well, you don't say anything about Benghazi--it exists, but the CTs around it are false). The other one is weird, but not something that matters, and could just be a faulty memory (why the fuck would someone lie about that? I don't know).

She was trying to appear badass and corageous to get votes, it is pretty obvious. War heroes are popular and many american presidents have a military background, being under sniper fire is the closest she can claim to be a hero.

It looks especially good if you get the country in a war later on, as you can claim that you once fought in one and is not a coward sending young men to die for your politics.

This is just too great...

Can't wait to see him interact with orther world leaders thru twitter memes. Should bring the lulz

Well sure. Was commenting more on the fact that trump seems to have got the nomination purely based on how awful the field of republicans were.

Now a lot of the support he's getting is purely based on how much a lot of people on both sides hate Hillary.

This might be the first time pure voter apathy is strong enough to propel a candidate all the way to the white house.

lol you can't stop voter apathy! #revolution

America is no longer the premier nation in the world and its decline in power is portrayed by the possible election of Donald Trump. Dont get me wrong it is still the strongest nation in the world but how can any nation claim superiority when its leader is Donald Trump? US is just another nation now.

Yea a persons words that my hurt my feelings is way more important than corrupt lying politics that impact lives, policies ect...

The idea of the president of the United States talking shit on Twitter is probably not a good look for America(ns)

I really hope Trump is trolling the media again with his presumptive Pence VP pick. CNN has already stated it's definitive in several articles while his camp has said otherwise.

LOL fucking Americans. If you elect Trump then you definitely deserve what you get but you will regret it. Sadly, the rest of the world doesn't deserve it so don't, just dont.

Trump is what you'll get, because it's what you need. If we wanted to punish the world we'd elect Hillary.

And what happened to this thread? Bunch of slack-jawed practitioners of alternative lifestyle in here.
