Topuria at 155 is a bad idea

The closest match is someone like Lopes. He's durable, violent, and prone to fire fights. He's the closest you're going to get.
From what I've seen, beyond Gaethje's chin finally being done, I don't see it being a good matchup for Ilia.
 
I'd rather just see him have new fights at 145. It's not like new ppl won't emerge at 145. Let him fight Lopes and Evloev and then see what the division is looking like.

All this double champ crap is nonsense. Half the time you just get a pointless fight and the guy goes back where they came from.

Isn't that what people said about max? How'd that turn out?

I think Justin gets hit too often and too clean for someone like Ilia to not find that shot he needs

I guess that's why he has one of the highest striking defense rates despite fighting striking ATGs in Holloway and Volk recently.
Gaethje ain't technical enough in footwork and defense.

It would be a damn good idea for him to move up and smash the fuck out of more aging MMA legends while they're still here. The juice is well worth the squeeze. Don't worry, huge names like Diego Lopes and Mosman Evlov aren't going anywhere.

he also said he wants to retire before he's 30. he's 28. if he beats Islam most likely there will be a rematch. so possibly 1-2 fights after that. that's not that many, he'll also likely campaign for the guy he wants to fight.

if he was going to stay there and fight for the next 5-7 yrs i would think it's bad. he's small and he keeps rolling the dice vs the bigger dudes he'll get got eventually, but if he sticks to his retire at 30 plan, he only has to beat 1 or maybe 2 guys besides Islam. i think that's doable.

He lost every round
Illia was in no danger, he was just getting loose, and then when he pushed the pace, took Jerome’s head off
Jerome Holloway stans need to fall back
Only a few guys at the very top of the division would give him a challenge at LW
 
he has a small frame for lightweight, I think he would struggle with arman and islam. Ilia would beat the other LWs though, I don't see gaethje, dustin, chandler, hooker surviving more than 3 rounds with him

nah, the 1st rd was competitive. and even the 2nd rd was competitive until the overhand right. even Volk was beating Topuria. not that either guy was hurting him, but the volume was there to outpoint him. Ilia bided his time and caught their timing and got them out of there, but it wasn't like he just dominated them the entire fight.

Jai Herbert almost knocked Topuria out. it's not like bigger guys at 155lb couldn't replicate that and exploit his crouch stance with long range kicks, especially Islam.

i still favor Topuria over most of the top guys at 155lb, but i wouldn't be surprised if somebody knocked him out either, he's got good offense but his defense is questionable and so is his grappling and cardio.
