Top five 165 lb. fighters

They don’t have to

Weight class is from 156 to 170

If we’re gonna take random numbers n pretend it’s a new weight class why not go with 160? Or 158? Or 162?
The weight class may be from 156-170 but no Welterweight is going to be stupid enough to weigh in at 156. 165 as a new weight class makes sense because it's 10 pounds from 155 and 170 would become 175 which separates all weight classes up to Middleweight by 10 pounds.

7 weight classes under 200 pounds separated by 10 pounds is not necessary.

For lower weight classes maybe, but after that there’s no point of having 165 n 175 especially with 170 being established for a long time n being very competitive.

It’s funny how everybody criticizes jones (who easily makes 205) for not moving up n facing hw (some who cut down to 265), but at the same time make excuses for other fighters n want to create a brand new division cause apparently 5 pounds makes a huge difference.

we are just adding the 165. The 170 becomes 175. It would be nice to have 195,215,225,235 and so on, but the LHW and HW divisions are already empty, no talent there. One day, when people start training mma seriously and we have a lot of heavy fighters, we can introduce those too

So the solution is to water down divisions that are not already water down?

Again there’s no reason to have that many weight classes.

If you add 165 n move 170 to 175, then fighters would just move around from one weight class to another, which defeats the purpose of weight classes.

Weight classes are there so cejudo can be a professional fighter n doesn’t have to face someone like ngannou. They are not there so Conor or gsp become triple champs.

not going to answer cause a 165 division would be fucking stupid.

Not really. They can't make the jump from 155 to 170 now, the weight/size difference is too big. One of the biggest 155ers in Cerone/Cheesa/Lee/Masvidal are just average/small WWs, RDA is very small at 170 and he was one of the strongest LWs. The evolution of fighters is to gain weight as they become older, but if they are 155ers, they can't do that, they'd get dwarfed at 170 as it is the case now.
Also, the LW class is the strongest now, we have plenty of good fighters. 155ers and 170ers will make the 165 immediately. The bigger 170s like Marty, Till,Maia, Neil go to 175, the smaller ones can go down to 165.

Also, some small MWs like Whitaker, Fatselum can go back to 175, as they are too small for 185.

So since some fighters can’t cut massive amount of weight anymore n can’t have size advantage, let’s make a new weight class to accommodate them?

Not everybody has to have size advantage n be able to cut 30 pounds to make weight.

There’s 155 n there’s 170

Fighters should either bulk up n move to 170 if they can’t make 155 anymore or lose some muscle mass to make 155 cut easier.

Why give weight cutters even more opportunities to cut massive amounts of weight n have a weight division between 155 n 170?

Even if you make 165 some fighters will still struggle between 155 n 165 n would ask for 160 division cause it suits them better.

Look at Aldo at 145. He obviously too small for that division now with Holloway as champ, but can’t make 135, so should ufc accommodate him with 140 division?

Another problem here is the archaic way of separating divisions by weight only.

As we see more n more reach n height are as important as weight, especially in mma.

So maybe the solution would be to include those 2 measurements in weight classes as well

So a guy who’s 5’8 with 69’ reach doesn’t have to face or be same weight as another guy who’s 6’2 with 75’ reach

So either have limits on height/reach per weight class or allow smaller guy with shorter reach to have extra few pounds on his opponent

Put Gaethje in there. His anti wrestling maybe the one to answer against Khabib's wrestling.

If he can do that at 170, then his leg kicks, anti wrestling and pressure could make him King at Welterweight. I'd love to see Gaethje vs Covington.

I mean it would essentially be a division of rejects from 155 and 170. Pettis, RDA, Lee, Cerrone, Perry, Vick, Nate.

Even at 165 I think Ferguson and khabib would beat everyone. Maybe even Poirier.

I agree just add askren.
