It won’t surprise you that I’ll take Fedor to beat Stipe head to head.Thing is I will put Stipe over Fedor in a head to head but careerwise I wont put Stipe above him. I think Stipe would beat Fedor in more cases than Fedor beats Stipe.
We have to realize Fedor small stature, level of opponents he beat wasent always on par to the modern UFC
If Gane revanges his loss and defends 3x or 4x I have to put him above Fedor
If Ngannou defends 3x more I have to put him above Fedor
My guess is Gane will surpass Fedor or Pavlovich will. My hope is Pavlovich does
What would a HW have to do to surpass Fedor in your opinion?
As far as surpassing Fedor, it’s certainly possible—Khabib surpassed BJ Penn at LW after all. But man it’s tough.
I’ve never cared about the number of fights in Fedor’s streak, as he had an assortment of cans and squashes in there. But what he did is beat about a dozen ranked guys, including 5 former/future UFC champs (I say “future” mainly to include Nog, who was PRIDE champ and #1 HW in the world in 2002, and still good enough to be UFC Interim champ 6 years later), with 5 total title defenses, in one continuous unbeaten run. Gane is not undefeated, and has 1 former champ on his resume which is JDS.
But when Gane fought JDS, JDS hadn’t been UFC champ in 8 years, and was smack in the middle of an 0-5 run, all stoppage losses, 4 of them in rd 1. Ngannou fought JDS a year and a half before that. Fedor has no former champs that far removed from their reign. Coleman is the closest, as it had been about 7 years since he was UFC champ but only 4 years since his PRIDE OW GP win.
—Fedor fought and beat Nog at his Nog’s peak.
—Fedor fought Sylvia when he was just 15 months removed from being UFC champ, and was coming off a fight for the UFC Interim belt.
—Fedor fought Arlovksi when he was less than 3 years removed from being UFC champ, was on a 5-fight win streak and ranked #2 in the world.
—Even Randleman was less than 4 years removed from being champ.
Ngannou’s resume is better than Gane’s, but again, Arlovksi hadn’t been champ in like 11 years, JDS hadn’t been champ in almost 7, Overeem hadn’t held a title in 6+ years, and ironically Cain was closes to a title reign (a little less than 4 years), but was probably in the worst condition as he so injury ridden he hadn’t even fought in 3 years.
Honestly man, it’s going to be very, very difficult to see a HW do what Fedor did. There are so many dimensions to it: if someone surpasses his title defenses, are the opponents better, or at least close to prime? Was this fighter unbeaten? Did he beat as many former champs, and were they in or near their prime?
What Fedor accomplished is pretty remarkable.
