Barnett/Couture is a great 1.... and Ricco v Couture
If you watch ricco vs randy, ricco nearly taps when Randy is trying to pass his guard. His knee gets tweaked super hard and he's one full tap away from losing the fight. Randy was putting it to him and then ricco fought through it and came back in a big way.
I wouldn't say that either Barnett or Ricco "mauled" Randy. Ironically, though, if I had to call one of those losses a mauling, it'd be the loss to Ricco simply because Ricco did way more damage with his GNP. But I wouldn't call either one a mauling since Randy did well early in both fights, and he actually did better for longer against Ricco. In both fights, Randy started off strong, hit TDs, and controlled from the top, but eventually both Barnett and Ricco were able to reverse the tide, put Randy on the bottom, and they were too big and Randy wasn't good enough to escape the bottom position. Against Barnett, considering it was early in the fight and a title fight to boot, I've always wished Big John let it go to round three. Randy was tough as nails and he took beatings from Rizzo and Ricco and kept coming at them, while Barnett was really just scoring points rather than really pulverizing him the way Ricco did. Randy could've made it to the third round. Not saying Big John robbed him, or even that he would've been able to win had the fight continued, as it did seem that Barnett had the game plan and had the answer for Randy's game, while Randy was struggling to deal with Barnett's size and his skill from his guard. I just wish we got more fight in that one. Ricco, meanwhile, just started beating Randy to TDs and his wrestling, top control, and GNP proved too much for Randy. Not to mention, that Ricco Rodriguez is my pick for the single most underrated fighter in MMA history, with his run through the UFC HW division culminating with that championship victory standing out as one of the most impressive title runs in MMA history.
Long story short: Neither were maulings in my book. They were just excellent, evenly-matched fights between elite competitors, and Randy came out on the losing end in both fights.
