Toothpick in your mouth during a fight

I actually know about 10 people right now who also spar with toothpicks. It was actually started by 2 guys originally but others in the gym have followed suit. I'm not saying Bendo has the same reasons as the guys I know but there is precedence.

1) Certain types of softened toothpicks absorb saliva and blood. This is useful if you generate a lot of drool with the mouthguard in.

2) Toothpicks can be manipulated, softened and flavored. Cinnamon toothpicks are used most often because they help with controlling food cravings and sugar levels when dieting and cutting weight. They also control cigarette cravings. Stronger doses of cinnamon also acts as a pain-reliever.

I was thinking that it has to be a certain type of toothpick because I know there's way more than one kind

but there's no way, it's your standard restaurant wooden toothpick with a spikey tip

Hmmm.... this fascination some of you have with this MAN's mouth and what he puts in it it has made me feel as if I stumbled across the wrong kind of thread. Don't get me wrong I'm not judging...to each his on.

Umm... That's my cue, I'm out

Yeah, just google "cinnamon toothpick." You can purchase these from many of places. They all claim the weight-loss, appetite/smoking suppression, sugar control and pain relief aspects.

I suspect that Bendo may have initially tried these out for the above reasons many years ago but as the years have gone on, this has just become a habit.

Maybe the toothpick is a direct connection between him and Jesus? Losing it could seriously fuck up his abilities.

Commissions better not fuck with that, can I get an amen!?

If I see one more toothpick thread on sherdog, I'm going to shit out a squirrel. A live squirrel.

Please do. Then when you post it on youtube and are famous, we can all remember, hey, we were there when the idea was conceived!

maybe he keeps it in a slot engraved into his mouthguard where you can slide it in but it can't pop out without some serious tongue maneuvering? in the gifs it looks like he's doing the fake BJ to get it out of wherever he keeps it. just spitballin' here. someone should find out whether he used it in the WEC days, if not then I think we've got a serious conspiracy theory here.

Fucken hell, I'd be more worried about the potential of using a toothpick to maim an opponent in the clinch than I would for the health of the person bringing it in.

It's illegal and it's good someone finally noticed it (I didn't). I don't think Bendo worries about what could happen, that it isn't his intention to cause something, but simply has a weird habit.

We all know what could happen during a clash of heads or them being on the ground and him accidentally scratching someone in the eye. I doubt it happens again.

First. It's very dangerous to fight with a sharp object in your mouth. If Bendo had been knocked out, he could've swallowed the toothpick (and possibly died). Bendo's been fighting and training and doing everything with the toothpick in mouth so far, isn't the Athletic Comission/ Referee supposed to look into fighters' mouths, since they are there to look after for the fighters?

Second. Benson Henderson probably has some kind of a neurosis - he feels he has to suck on that toothpick. People with psychotic neurosis can't function normally if they are suddenly unable to satisfy that neurosis. It's like taking a pacifier from a baby. Can Benson Henderson function without the toothpick in his mouth. Seriously. These kinds of things take LOOOOOOOONG rehabilitation. I think this is pretty serious shit.

I think everyone is overlooking that the fact benson had that tooth pick in his mouth probably for full 5 round fight is just more impressive and shows how confident he is

Regardless of how packed tight it was in his mouth, it is still a foreign object in the ring. That is cause for some disciplinary action. Im a fan of Bendo but that behavior is just stupid

As a fan, I don't have a problem with it but if I was him or an opponent it would raise some concerns.

I know it's a trademark but take that shit out. It's not like Rony Jason fights with his mask on.

At the end of the day, it's between the fighters and commission.

But that's just my

Can't believe some people are still questioning if he had a toothpick in his mouth...it is a fact that he did. We have images and videos.

In interviews he's said that he rolls all the time in the gym w/ the toothpick. I was sitting near his dad at the fights and he had a toothpick in his mouth, too!

This was my thought, except not to absorb saliva, but rather create it. The object in the mouth will stimulate saliva production, could help with dry mouth from breathing with a mouth guard in. He probably is just used to it as a routine/confidence thing too. Hopefully he's smart enough to use the flat ended toothpicks.

not that hard to keep a small piece of vertical wood in your mouth unless you start coughing etc
