I DO see your point, but I keep thinking about mouthpieces. Mouthpieces are designed to mold to your teeth, and are custom fit. On top of that, you bite down on them, further securing them in place. Yet, they get knocked out of fighter's mouths all the time!
A toothpick is not designed to stay put while in a mouth. And I still say it could potentially be a safety issue. And if nothing else, even a soft toothpick could potentially choke Bendo during a fight, and affect the outcome of the fight.
The difference hear is the size of the toothpick and the mouth piece, and also the fact that some mouth pieces are not properly fit. You will see some guys have a hard time actually removing their mouth pieces, and some guys lose theirs 2-3 times in a fight. That isn't because 1 guy got KOd, that is because either he spit it out, or it doesn't fit properly and he was too tired to keep biting down to hold it in place.
The toothpick doesn't require any energy at all, his own facial/mouth structure, and his mouth piece will hold it in place. There is no extra room in his mouth where he would keep the toothpick packed. Is anyone concerned about teeth becoming dislodged and chocking on them? It is just incredible unlikely.
And even IF he got KOd, and the toothpick somehow managed to become dislodged, the odds of it doing any actual damage or posing a significant risk are really low. He wouldn't be swallowing while he is unconscious, so I wouldn't worry about choking. Puncture would be his biggest concern, and that would take quite a few additional shots while he is unconscious to get the toothpick in a position to cause it to puncture him anywhere. And a puncture wouldn't be fatal.
I would say at least 2 shots just to properly dislodge it while he is out cold, then another to get it into a position to cause any damage, and a final blow to cause the puncture, which would likely be incredible minor and the least of Bendos concerns after being KOd.
You guys gotta remember, people aren't meant to be knocked unconscious. That alone is probably 1000s of times more dangerous then having a toothpick in your mouth, yet we celebrate every time we see someone go out cold. We are very rarely concerned for fighters safety.
