Tony Ferguson's last five fights... just the facts

Yes that’s true but Tony appeared to be taking over regardless

Pettis was getting pressured and bullied before he broke his hand and he was getting pressured and bullied after he broke his hand. Yes, he caught Tony with a clean shot, who recovered quickly, but that’s really about it.

All very true...and then there was Pettis vs Wonderboy...he was getting pretty messed up...until Wonderboy was on his back seeing stars. It is what it is...not the same as a full fight to finish or judges, which was my point.

Tony Ferguson is currently 36 years old.

Tony Ferguson was born on February 12, 1984.
Okay, turns 37 in a month or two. My point still stands. Again, how many notable LW’s have been in top form beyond 34/35 or so? I can’t think of any.

The guy is 36 years old. He's clearly a couple years past his prime; this shouldn't be surprising to anyone. And having LCL surgery at 34 didn't help matters.

Feel free to make a list of LWs who have been successful after the age of 35.

Hopefully, Tony Ferguson will be the first (or one of the first) to do it in the Lightweight Division.

Tony is a pressure blood and guts fughter. Those past 5 fights, he’s had many like that throughout his caeeer where he just breaks and out wills his opponents

Did they? Correct if I'm wrong. I think Khabib pulled out several times. Tony pulled out a few as well.

Tony turned down interim TS vs Holloway and it was given to Poirier. Poirier beat Holloway and consequently fought to unify the belt. That would have been Tony if he accepted, no?
Tony was the interim champ with a fight lined up against Khabib when he hurt his knee tripping over a cable. UFC then disrespected him by stripping the interim belt Instead of just waiting for him to heal.

From Tony's perspective, why fight for the interim belt a second time when the UFC has already shown you interim belts don't matter? He's already done enough for a title shot, so just wait.

Tony screwed up by fighting Gaethje instead of waiting for Khabib.

you could probably scrutinize lots of fighter's records, by looking deeply in how the fights went. the bottom line, is that tony won those fights. that's all that matters. it also matters that tony has lost two in row.

McGregor last 5 fights

1) Beat a broken Cowboy who literally took a dive
2) Got choked out by Khabib
3) Played hand slap with Mayweather and got KOed on his feet
4) Koed Alvarez, who is also getting KOed by cans in ONE FC
5) Gifted a decision win against Diaz, who had previously finished him

being a hater made you biased and you clearly tweaked conor's record. he did manage to outstrike that old man at the pub, and scored a decision against the bus and cell phone based on damage.

It was a given in my mind that someone would come say this.

Someone has to be that guy haha, besides I've already said what I had to say about Tony YEARS ago, and briefly when he lost, he caught lighting in a bottle so to speak with that streak.

Johnson, Dustin, Gaethje, and to a degree Conor will always present problems for him because of his style and lack of striking defense. He was always known for being durable, and that's NOT because he wasn't getting hit, it's because he WAS and stayed in it.

I remember arguing 2 years ago on here that Dustin would have destroyed him, and was met with people talking about his pace, and BJJ, and I kept saying styles make fights, and if he welcome's a stand up fight with someone with heavy hands and good MMA Boxing, they're going to give him fits.

I know that Ferguson and Kevin Lee are better fighters than Barboza.

How could he do better than winning those fights?

1. Lost to a younger fighter, father time 2. Career changing beating from Gaethje 3. Cerrone was on a 3 fight win streak and coming off a dominant win over Al. 4. Tony was 6 months removed from a catastrophic knee injury and made pettis quit. 5. Lee was also on a 5 fight win streak with 4 straight finishes.

  1. Charles Olivera - Loss - lost all 3 rounds, 1 or more 10-8s
  2. Justin Gaethje - Loss - Lost all 5 rounds
  3. Donald Cerrone - Win - 2 rounds, somewhat dominant over Donald who is winless in his last five fights
  4. Anthony Pettis - Win - Back and forth fight. Nearly finished twice but came back. Anthony Pettis is 3-4 in his last 7
  5. Kevin Lee - Win - Back and forth fight, came back to finish Lee after early adversity. Kevin Lee is 1-3 in his last four fights
Connect your own dots, make no assumptions. :)

So now, we’re not acting like Tony is 37?? Is there any all time great LW that has looked great beyond 35ish?? Also, all of those guys you listed were coming off win streaks or big wins when they fought Tony and were actually fighting pretty well at the time. That’s more important than just throwing up there recent records. You can pick apart any fighter’s resume by doing that. For instance, people say Pettis was washed when he fought Tony but he was only like 31 and had just recently fimsihed Chiesa and Oliveira and went on to KO Wonderboy right after losing to Tony. Was Pettis washed at 31 when a lot of LWs hit their prime or was he just fighting more and more elite comp? Cowboy and Lee were also fighting well with several top 10 win streaks at the time. But sure, you can just just throw their record up there and say they suck.

Pettis had lost 5 of his previous 8 going into the Ferguson fight. That put him at 6 losses in 9. We can't pretend that was showtime Pettis

I think we can conclude Tony survived all those years by toughness and durability. In every fight he always got damage....

Another loser overanalyzing a fighter's career, what a surprise...

TUF winner
12 fight win streak
Interim champion
Never been in a boring fight and fans will always tune in to see him
Came back from a serious knee injury in six months
Probably made a shit ton of money

Loses to two absolute monsters in Gaethje 2.0 and Oliveria and now he was never much good. Tough gig getting credit from MMA fans

I was posting about this last year before the Gaethje fight. Tony had a nice string of wins vs. Guys who are known to quit vs. Heavy pressure. Its why I was shocked to see Nate as small favorite over Pettis too.

Dustin would have done the same thing to Tony and Conor too. He is a good fighter who is on the downside.
