Someone says something that makes no sense (Tom is faking it and lying), many people just copy this nonsense and before you know it, it becomes their truth and they are unable to grasp that there is a chance that they might be wrong. All evidence to discredit the nonsense is ignored and they double down and make shit up so they can keep believing their lie. Emotionally developed people can admit they are wrong, but there are few around.
