Media Tom Aspinall to Chael: "I Won't Sell Myself Out and Act Like a Clown"

It’s a fair question. Could Randy Couture have sold less PPV if he’d tried to be a pro wrestling heel and screwed it up? Possibly. Would Anderson Silva, Demetrius Johnson, Volkanovski, or other great fighters who are a tad vanilla have lost anything? I’m not so sure.

While I would NOT want to see dozens of fighters try to be Conor McGregor or Chael Sonnen as an outside observer, were I advising a fighter I think I would have a hard time making the case that giving it a shot could backfire in a manner that had materially adverse financial consequences.

I honestly suspect they would have, or at least could have. I've seen enough evidence to suggest that it's entirely possible, even outside of my compunctions as a fan from watching a sport filled with everyone rewatching old McGregor interviews attempting to recycle his old lines.

It’s so cringey hearing fighters say shit McGregor has clearly already said before

What do you mean? You're telling me this isn't peak entertainment material for you?

Wow, shocking. You're the world's biggest wmma fan and your favorite fighter is committed to being boring.

<1>

Wow, shocking. He likes a well-rounded Heavyweight who finishes his opponents every time and doesn't care if he trash-talks his opponents in between doing so lmao.

As for WMMA...

<{vega}>

Does it trigger you that much that you feel it necessary to shoehorn it in to every conversation?

If you aren't willing to self-promote you better hope all of your fights are barnstormers (and you never lose).

Otherwise, say goodbye to any form of aspirations you have of being (truly) well-paid.

It is what it is boys.

Uncle Chael knows this game like the back of his hand.

(edit)
To expand on that: Tom should start calling the HW division a pack of cunts and promise brain damage to any cunt that signs the dotted line. Keep it simple but keep starching cunts, he has the ability to do that, for sure. It is what it is boys.

Honestly Chaels content has degraded so bad, talks a lot but doesn't say anything

He’s always been that way IMHO. Minimal prep, comes up with half an idea, goes down to his basement, hits record, and babbles for 4-5 minutes.

To be honest, how many trash talkers ever actually become dominant world title holders? Even Adesanya isn't exactly a shit talker.

Lotta haters but he's decimating the YT game.

It is what it is boyz. Uncle Chael bless.

Aspinall's humility is one of the things I like about him. He's actually become a little more... brash and self-confident in his last several media appearances even before beating Volkov, albeit not to the point of being arrogant. Really coming into his own and getting comfortable with who and where he is. It's been a pleasure to see.

Watching him try to play into some kind of unnatural heel act would be painful. I understand Chael is probably genuinely trying to be helpful, but he should stay in his lane.

Yeah because shooting up the Heavyweight rankings with a 100% early finish rate, playing up his connections to Fury, and headlining a card in his country where the people went crazy for him just reeks of stale boredom.

/ thread.

Great post.

I didn’t even watch your post. Sherboi’s out here looking for pointless arguments today.

Whatever the hell you posted…yes, it’s cringey to hear ANY fighter copy McGregor

What? I genuinely wasn't trying to bait you, I was agreeing with you by posting a video as an example of what you and I were discussing that I personally find hilarious.

Oh okay…my bad then. You could’ve been more clear though.

Being in the UK, I have zero doubts Aspinall is on the path to superstardom.

I get that Chael found a formula, but it's simply incorrect that he's found the correct formula for anyone but him.

It's about time we had a down-to-Earth gentle giant to counterbalance all the inane bullshit everyone else comes out with.

I suppose it depends how you define superstardom but that seems like a stretch IMHO. The guy is a good fighter, and any decent UK fighter will garner support and sell tickets locally. Blowing up more than that will be tough though. If Francis stays and Jones beats Stipe and then Aspinall blows them both out of the water, sure, that would be next level. But if he’s just one of the guys in the mix trading the title around for the next few years I’m not so sure. I don’t see a clear pathway to him capturing the attention of the random casual fan.

Great post.

Much appreciated man. Unfortunately it's not a sentiment everyone seems to share.

Which is fine, of course. Objectively I understand why someone might enjoy the flamboyance/heel act even if it's not my thing... but it just seems weird to have certain Sherbros playing Armchair Chael shitting on a pro fighter for not fulfilling their trash-talk fix and saying he'll never be rich/popular/great because of it.
