Media Tom Aspinall signs his first title defence

No, Alex would fight straight for the belt. The UFC said that if Alex goes to HW, it's either against JJ or Tom. And Alex isn't small. Have you seen the footage recently in which he's weighing 243 pounds while keeping the same bulk, with little fat mass? Is 244 pounds with a Gane-like body small for HW? No, it's not. Even Ngannou said Alex would definitely be successful and have an easier time in HW than in LHW, saying he'd likely get the belt, but wondered "how long would he be able to defend the belt? I don't know. But yes, he'd definitely be successful and likely get the belt there"
Alex isnt naturally a bigger guy like that though. he's bulking up. he competed at MW and LHW throughout his kickboxing career. that definitely matters.
i guess him fighting for the HW belt isnt the biggest deal; he defended the LHW belt three times so i get why they would give him a shot. Islam's doing the same thing at welterweight.
when did Ngannou say that? was it before Tom had won the interim? i just think Tom is too big naturally and is more comfortable moving around at that weight, whereas Alex has been a smaller guy for the majority of his life.
i just see the fight ending in an early submission for Tom if he doesnt get caught. Alex has good grappling for a guy who started doing that later in life but Tom's been doing it for far longer. and even if Tom does get caught, there's no guarantee Alex will still have the same power at heavyweight.

maybe im just a minority but i really dont care about Alex vs Tom.

Breaking news that offers zero actual news of any kind. Tightly run ship over there, as usual

I see it the opposite way... I think Alex vs Aspinall would go down like Alex vs Jiri Prochazka 1 ... While JJ vs Aspinall would go down like JJ vs Reyes (close fight but JJ pulls off a 3-2).

Ppl forget that Jiri destroyed Reyes... And the Jiri who faced Alex the 2nd time was better than the one who beat up Reyes. He admittedly was in great shape, coming off a big win vs Rakić. No one at the time Jiri beat Reyes would think Jon Jones would smoke Jiri Prochazka easily... And JJ and Tom are tied up in overall performances (both 1 round sub quick wins vs similar competition in Gane and Volkov). That goes to show that the HW talent pool isn't as good as LHW elites, who kept evolving. Reyes was bringing a new face to LHW, like Santos, who challenged JJ. He was like Aspinall, tho fans at the time didn't see it that way as they'd take JJ winning as a granted thing. Looking at Reyes' record tho, 14-0, most wins being round 1 quick KOs vs opponents whose win streak were above that Tom has faced except Pavlovich. The same for Jiri Prochazka.

Alex came in and dominated that era and lost to the best LHW in Ankalaev while fighting with Norovirus (which is backed up) and a fractured limb. Since he's naturally bigger than Jon Jones and can make 243 lbs without fatting up like Jon Jones, his power would translate even better there, just like it did when he went up to LHW and beat Jan, Jiri twice and Hill and Khalil (who's now #3 ranked)... His chin would hold up better since he wouldn't be cutting weight, his leg kicks would be more devastating with that size, as well. And he defended 12 TDs attempts from Anakalev while under the weather. Ankalaev trained Sambo in Dagestan since he was little. It obviously would be a bigger threat for Tom than any HW right now, just like Topuria would be a bigger threat for Islam than any lightweight... And honestly, to me, it's also a bigger threat to Tom than Jones would be. To JJ too, Alex would be a bigger threat than Tom IMO.

Ppl underestimate LHWs when in reality, whoever does well in a way more talented and complex division, is expected to do even better when moving up while having the weight of a up division, which Alex does... As the best LHW right now, Alex, having a fresh HW frame, Tom would be easier to him than dealing with complex LHWs like Ankalaev, whom he had a close fight with even while he was not in a good condition, fighting with Norovirus while coming off a 3 world tittle defense in 8 months in short time saving events and the 2024 year, vs the new LHW era... Which isn't anything to make little of, and the latest fight showed his grappling skills held up well enough vs someone whose takedown ability is >> Tom's (Ankalaev) even while Alex was fighting compromised. Not to mention , looking at Tom's recent video (he did a dead leg challenge vs YouTubers), Tom appears to have lost quite a bit of his weight... He isn't as big as he once was. And funnily enough, whenever he records these new videos of having fun with influencers, there's a Brazillian flag showing up in the gym he is in... Which is curious...

eh, i dunno. Alex seems like he might be too small for Tom.
if Alex DOES go up to heavyweight and manages to beat a top 10 guy, then i guess why not?
Alex is like 243lbs now. dude is a big LHW.

I don't think he is small but Aspinall should be able to take him down and maul him or sub him.

Damn... Look at this video!!! This fight must happen!!!!

Great, now off to see if the challenger signs it too...

*second defence
Tapology seems to do that for Interim champions that win the Undisputed belt, they will probably do the same here, even tho he didnt win it.

I'm a neutral here with Tom, but will anyone take the fight seriously if it's not Gane?

Vs Alex Pereira!! Please!!! That's the fight we want to see!! And the one that makes the most sense for Tom!

Definitely, but I'd also be happy to wait for that one as well!

If it's announced, AWESOME, if it's a regular heavyweight title defence, also fine as long as we start moving towards Aspinall vs Pereira at some point 😆

Yeah!!!

Why would anyone take the fight seriously if it is Gane? It's not like Gane has a realistic chance to knock out Aspinall on the feet or to survive against Aspinall on the ground. Other than praying that Aspinall doesn't have a gas tank, Gane's only paths to victory are DQ and freak injury, and even if Aspinall doesn't have a gas tank Gane still needs to survive the early fight and there's nothing in his skill set that would point to him being someone particularly likely to do that. Realistically, a Gane/Aspinall fight is either a squash for Aspinall or consists of Gane running away from Aspinall in the hopes that Aspinall gasses chasing him, and who knows if Gane can even run away after his foot injury?

Of course, Alex Pereira would be likely the best fight in the UFC... Like I've said , I think Alex Pereira and Ankalaev are the current best fighters and will have their rematch in HW if Alex wins... As Ank said he would fight in HW vs Alex too. But I think Alex, Ankalaev, Aspinall... Those 3 are all elite fights. Ppl see the first fight between Alex and Ank as boring but ppl like fights in which fighters throw cautious to the window and goes on heavy exchanges swinging and blooding each other... When fighters are elite, sometimes the fight is studied. I could see when rewatching the Ank vs Alex fight in slow motion, many feints that one of them would do and the other wouldn't bite with them subtly acknowledging like "it won't work!!" ...master chess players don't go throwing hands like a heavy exchange in the pocket, they are snipers who wait for that single shot. So elite fighters may make boring fights for a casual audience. Ankalaev clearly didn't find it boring, he said Alex is on another level from all the other fighters and he had a lot of fun in the fight... Alex thought the same.

if Kimbo was alive he knock him out

Tom should fight Gane, then Volkov/Almeida winner then Alex. After that, if the division does not get better, he might as well retire.

I'm sure it's been mentioned but this will be the SECOND defense. If you're going to make a whole thread about it, take the time to get it right.
