TJ Dillashaw's Suspension: Why EPO Is Such A Disgraceful Banned Substance For An MMA Fighter

Blood bags? Im curious. Tell me more please.

LMAO where the hell have you been? Ever heard of Lance Armstrong? Anybody with a mild internet in sports should know all about EPO just from the armstrong shit.

If there was any question as to the shitbag status of Dillasnake, this pretty much confirms it. Hilarious that Garbrant literally said EPO was what he was doing last year. Crazy.

Not a big deal because his last fight ended before he had the chance to use any cardio lol.

Blood bags? Im curious. Tell me more please.

You withdraw a bag of your own blood either in the off season, or at a time when you arent competing, and you store it. (refrigerated about 3-4 weeks, frozen for months)

You then shortly before competing, you re-infuse the bag of blood.

So lets say the average body has 5 litres of blood in it.

You re-infuse 500ml - So you are increasing the amount of blood in your body (and therefore your oxygen carrying capacity) by 10%

Re-infuse a litre and you are looking at a 20% gain in oxygen carrying capacity

(although with the bio-passport now athletes are using much smaller volumes, maybe 250ml bags, sometimes even smaller)

This is one of the reason the very top teams can maintain such a ridiculous pace for 90 minutes.. Ever wonder how Man Utd scored so many goals in the last ten minutes of games? Because they will still firing, their opponents were knackered. Same with Real Madrid, Barca, and hey, Im a Liverpool fan, but our increased workrate and cardio since our German saviour arrived isnt co-incidence :D

thats the simplest way. For some sports athletes would store 10-12 bags in the off season ready for that season. In cycling they would have 5-6 bags ready at the start and then it would be a constant cycle all season, taking one out between races, putting it back in teh night before the race.

This is what the bio passport attempts to combat.

For instance when you take a bag out your Hb volume drops and your reticulocyte's (immature blood cells) increase as the body tries to make more blood for what it perceives as blood loss. When you re-infuse a bag the opposite happens, your Hb volume increases and your retics drop. The skill in blood doping now is how to do it without tripping the passport.

Cardio is the premier weapon in all of the combat sports. You and your opponent get tired just walking out to the ring/cage from the nerves and adrenaline alone. Its why they train like mad men during camps. I must admit, it prob feels great on it, but its very, very shameful.
you get tired walking to the cage?? what?

Well at least nobody is going to accuse my boy Conor of taking the EPO

From GOAT candidate to potential life ban?? Damn, if they retest old samples his biggest wins could end up overturned, am i right? Suspension might not change from the 2 years, but it might be devastating for his career.

yikes. we suspected it was bad when he 'voluntarily' gave up the belt. now accepts a 2yr ban without a peep?

add in that if it injectable-only, ruling out all 'tainted supplement' possibilities...it's about as clear a case of intentional cheating that you can have, absent a full confession from TJ.

in another thread, someone mentioned Schaub was saying that the testing had just recently improved for EPO? so now I wonder if TJ is but the first guy we will see pop...and if USADA can and will indeed test past samples, how many more could we see???

Heres Luke talking absolute garbage on EPO and its effects.. that it can be replicated by high altitude training etc, that shit was debunked like 15 years ago.

Nah, you know what works even better?

Luke Thomas' Farts>>>>Training mask >>> high altitude training >>>> EPO

I've had a few armature boxing matches. they are pro fighters, they dont get tired walking to the cage.

It's an adrenaline dump. The nerves do it to you. Not physical exertion.

Frank Mir said he pukes before every fight. He gasses himself completely in the locker room (pre-fight) then waits for his second wind. Otherwise he gets an adrenaline dump mid-fight and "hits the wall"

I get it, tired is just the wrong word. and I'm sure every fighter deals with it different. does Jon jone seem tired before his fights?

All banned substance violations in combat sports are not created equally. Too often a blanket is thrown over every mixed martial artist who tests positive, and that’s an example of widespread ignorance when it comes to doping. All that said, TJ Dillashaw’s recent dirty urine sample is pretty indefensible.

The 33-year-old former UFC Bantamweight Champion was suspended two years by USADA on Tuesday after he submitted a dirty urine sample ahead of his bout on January 19 against UFC Flyweight Champion Henry Cejudo. Dillashaw was attempting to become the third fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two different divisions simultaneously.

It didn’t work out. Cejudo knocked Dillashaw out in the first round. To make matters worse, Dillashaw popped for recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) aka EPO. This is widely regarded as one of the worst drugs an MMA fighter can test positive for–in the spirit of fair competition.

Here is USADA’s brief explanation of the drug, and what it does to benefit athletes. The synthetic hormone is used to stimulate the body’s production of red blood cells. It increases oxygen transport and aerobic power in the body. It is classified with Peptide Hormones, Growth Factors, Related Substances, and Mimetics.

To offer further perspective, take a look at a more detailed breakdown from the BBC, which was posted back in 2006:

What is it?

  • Erythropoietin (EPO) is a hormone naturally produced by the kidneys.
  • However, this hormone can be artificially produced to improve the performance of, for example, athletes or cyclists by injection.
Why would athletes do this?

  • Its overall effect is to increase endurance and, in athletics, it is used mainly by long-distance runners.
  • It is injected under the skin and stimulates red blood cell production.
  • The more red cells there are in your body, the more oxygen that can be delivered to the muscles.
  • This delays the onset of fatigue, meaning an athlete can run harder and for longer.
How effective is this drug?

  • Tests in Australia have shown that improvements in an athlete’s performance over four weeks would match those expected over several years.
Is its use detectable?

  • It cannot be traced by conventional drug testing.

  • New methods have been developed in France where the results of blood sample analysis and urine analysis are compared.

  • These techniques were introduced ahead of the Sydney Olympics last year, although no positive tests were announced.

  • The blood test will show if there is an unusual reading of blood cells.

  • The following urine test will then be able to highlight any difference between the EPO levels produced naturally and synthetically.
This explains why Dillashaw has been raked over the coals in the early aftermath of the announcement. Rival and former teammate Cody Garbrandt accused Dillashaw of using EPO a year ago. His accusations and MMA media reaction don’t paint a picture of optimism for the former champion who will be 35 before he’s eligible to return to the sport–if he’s welcomed back into competition.

This is pretty damning.

“It’s not a substance you find in contaminated supplements, it’s injectable only. You have to know what you’re doing when it enters your system.” – @JeffNovitzkyUFC to @bokamotoESPN on TJ Dillashaw using EPO.https://t.co/0OH5TJrDy2

When your gas tank and volume of offense are your biggest weapons, EPO is indeed a legacy killer. This is far worse than any asterisks you can put beside Jon Jones name IMO https://t.co/2iMkDe8RcR

I mean, T.J. Dillashaw kept insisting he could drop another ten pounds without his performance suffering as a result. And now he’s been popped for EPO. That’s some walking like a duck, talking like a duck stuff right there. https://t.co/odTNwgg10E

EPO … for a guy who relied on pushing the pace and won key fights late and in brutal fashion this is unforgivable. https://t.co/it1yHkmhCN
