News Titanic Tours Submersible missing in atlantic ocean

That looks like it was a military operation though. This was a private company operating in a thrill seeking endeavor.

Civilian airliner and the search for the Argentinian sub was an international effort. The US used the CURV 21 for that.

Also a search and recovery is different from a search and rescue operation, both in assests assigned and urgency

That definitely justifies increased regulation then.

The wreck in international waters. So which country would foot the bill for monitoring and enforcing and under what world wide international treaty would grant jurisdiction?

Frankly I'd rather our coastal defense forces be used to prevent detect/prevent actual crime.

Both nations, USA & Canada, monitor international waters thousands of miles from their coasts.

Its a relatively easy area to monitor. No ships would have any lawful reason to stay stationary for a day within miles directly above the wreckage.... say a 10 mile radius.

Yeah, in both of those cases it started as search and rescue, at least theoretically, but even well after there was no chance of survivors the international efforts continued.

I'm am well familiar with that fact (as you know) and with the actions said nations are permitted to prevent/interdict.

Currently no country has the right to enforce that, and unlike the USN securing a zone over a nuclear assest lost at sea during recovery, I can't see the international community going along with creating an exclusionary zone over an old civilian shipwreck in international waters.

Correct. They were high profile cases, but there was less a sense of urgency and resourse saturation.

The worst part of all of this if theyre still alive is that it would be completely dark, freezing cold, and people would have had to piss and shit multiple times by now and there was only a tiny piss bottle.

So theres piss and shit everywhere, possibly vomit, and theyre just sitting there breathing it in until they die. Its like being locked in a porta pottie that tipped over until you suffocate to death… the stuff of nightmares.

So that dispels the 'strict laws' myth then.

But my point earlier that it'd be a business offering the $250K/passenger expeditions based somewhere in either America or Canada, with a private boat large enough to able to carry a submarine of that size. Only a few relatively wealthy people would be able to own that, so it'd be significantly easier to track them if they were to offer deep-sea expeditions to the Titanic.

Companies offering that would be very expensive if they weren't based in North America.

Not unless they're rescued. They're bolted in from the outside. It's really their only chance at surviving, though. Even if they found them on the ocean floor, it's not like they can get a tow to the surface. I'd rather not find them there, if I'm the rescue team, because all you're gonna be able to do is tell them that they're fucked.
Can't they just break them out?

Since it's cold it wouldn't smell as much at least. In a porta potty bacteria, etc. gets at it, but this is apparently colder than a fridge.

Well this situation certainly has a high profile, although obviously recovery of a one off submarine lacks the potential benefits of investigating/recovering a crashed airliner which is in widespread use.

Fuuuuck….. going and playing Scooby Doo in the ocean wasn’t such a good idea after all. Poor bastards that sounds horrific.

Ever notice how a vast many luxury mega yachts and cruise ships aren't US Flagged vessels?

Ever wonder why..? Or why casino cruises only start playing when they reach international waters?

*Sigh*

Thank you for posting that.

Very awesome of you.

But in reality, they probably had non-mechanical means of storing their waste. Getting from the surface to a 3800 meters below the surface takes many hours, the last I heard. Given the amount of passengers, each with normal bodily functions, they probably weren't planning on holding their bodily functions for multiple hours even if everything went correctly.

Someone said there’s a toilet.

Isn’t there a rule for serving alcohol on planes too?
