This is why Gary Oldman is the greatest actor of this generation.

Guy did it as a functioning alcoholic, too.........

I watched Lincoln where he over acted so much his character wasn't even believable. That character had no soul. The character never let you in.

I watched In the Name of the Father where during tthe serious scenes he had trouble not smirking.

Neither character showed solid vulnerability.

You wanna see a strong actor play strong and then vulnerable. Watch De Niro in Goodfellas and then watch his vulnerability in Casino.

Same type of movie and two vastly different characters. De Niro nailed self doubting and passive aggressive in Casino while he shined in Goodfellas as an over the top tough guy.

De Niro proved in Cape Fear and Raging Bull he could match and possibly surpass DDL's style of over the top characters.

DDL's scene chewing gets obnoxious, what are your thoughts on PSH?

DDL is awesome. there will be blood was epic.
but he picks and chooses his roles very carefully and then goes away for a while.
like during one of his haituses, he went and studied under a master shoe maker to learn how to cobble shoes ffs.
who does that?
Sounds like a pretty awesome way to live life. If I figure out a way to make enough money to live comfortably while only working a few months per year, I'll definitely spend my other time learning trades and hobbies. Shoemaking wouldn't be at the top of my list, but whatever.

I thought he was very believable as Lincoln. Can you see someone else playing that role better?

In the Name of the Father could very well be his best performance. I thought he shown great range of emotions in that role.

Who is the actress equivalent of Oldman? Tilda Swinton?
Meryl Streep? She's only 9 years older. Cate Blanchett is the heir apparent from Generation X. Jennifer Lawrence for the Millenials.

Kids these days know nothing about range. DDL has problems playing a likeable character. Can you imagine him playing a role where he needs to truly be vulnerable?

He's great at over the top and slightly crazy but he has trouble playing normal or weak.

DDL is likeable in gangs of New York. He makes a racist criminal likeable, no mean feat.

I'm more of a Shia LeBouf kinda dude, but Oldman is okay I guess.

Mason Verger..

I had no idea that was Gary... I've always enjoyed him but that turns my fandom up a notch.

On topic: I have something like a top 10. Any of them could be #1 on any given day. Most have been mentioned.

Jeff Bridges deserves an honorable mention. Though he plays a lovable derelict in his best roles
