Opinion They helped US order airstrikes against Taliban. Now Trump’s moves have left those Afghans in limbo

He started Operation Allies Welcome to help vulnerable Afghans get out of Afghanistan and to help them start their immigration paperwork. But that paperwork takes time and its not a fast pass, once they are paroled into the US they have two years, which can be renewed, and have to apply for whatever immigration status they are eligible for and that takes time to process, hence the guy quoted in the OP talking about how he was in the middle of his process when all this was paused.

Estimates are that something like ~73,000 Afghan personal have been paroled into the US under this initiative.

See the above post, Biden did initiate an operation to facilitate these Afghans coming over and tens of thousands did. It’s just that it takes time to process immigration applications and those who are in the middle of their respective applications are now vulnerable with Trump trying to blow the whole thing up.
I worked with a lot of Afghan “allies” while there in 2013. Just because you worked with us doesn’t exactly mean you’re a good person. Plenty of deals with the devil went on there and continued to go on during the war.

There’s a reason it takes time. A lot of them won’t pass a decent vetting process.

While it sucks some are now stuck in limbo, pinning it entirely on Trump is pretty dumb

Uh sure but the point is Biden did in fact make an effort to bring them over here and successfully brought over tens of thousands. But as you yourself admit it takes time to process them which means many are still waiting in wings and that's why Trump suspending the program is an issue.

He suspended the program though, why shouldn't he be blamed for that if he's the one doing it?

I don't think the issue is thorough vetting. It should be thorough.

It's canceling it altogether and fucking over the people you made promises to and said you'd help in exchange for the work that they did.

It is a horrible look for the United States.

I try not to make things about race but honestly the goal very much seems to be to limit nonwhite immigration into the country so from that POV its a success.

Crazy to me that he can't make exceptions for military assets/allies. That is the very least he can do. It is inexcusable. Not sure what else you can point to as to why he is stopping these specific programs. They've helped save American lives.

So they had 3 years under Biden to get them in, not to mention getting them in before the withdrawal form Afghanistan but now it’s Trump’s fault?

Makes sense
"Then President Donald Trump issued executive orders that put an end to programs used to help Afghans get to safety in America. Now those same Afghans, who underwent a yearslong background check, find themselves in a state of limbo."

Have people been getting background checks that take years before being brought here? If Trump just issued an EO to halt those programs then yes it's his fault. Vetting them seems like a good idea instead of just shipping everyone that worked for us there and their families here and trusting none are Islamic radicals.

Ah man, you disappoint me so much in this moment. Yes, it is Trump's fault. They were following the vetting process. One person mentioned in the article in the OP was practically just waiting to be picked up and that's all been thrown away now. Read the fucking article.

There isn't a way to have them legally migrate? Or is there no such thing anymore?
- Outside of my knowledge. I've read several threads about this, some started by me, i remeber being a bad plan by all accounts.

Didn't Jesus tell us to bang the widow, starve the orphan, and shit on the immigrant?

For you were once immigrants in the land of Egypt and fuck them, you got yours now.

Pretty sure there's a bible passage that goes something like that.

But a lot of them did pass the vetting process or were most of the way through it and they're fucked now. What if they get deported back to Afghanistan? It just sucks to be them I guess, eh?

It’s shitty, but I think Trump’s response was a broad push back against all the mass refugee shenanigans from the last administration. Had the Biden administration been so concerned they should have streamlined the process.

Despite the need for increased vetting, it doesn’t take 3 plus years to process shit.

I hope they don’t get sent back if they are somewhere safe. But some are still in Afghanistan and were never brought out in the first place during the pull out from Afghanistan.

It says some will be considered on a case by case basis and I hope the DOD/State Dept pushes these cases through.

Brother, I say this with complete respect for you as a human being as well as the human beings affected by these insane executive orders.

Fuck this bad faith argument.

If the Biden admin had done that you'd be shitting on them for not vetting properly.

I respect the work you've done and what you contribute to your community but you say some really retarded shit from time to time in the war room.

They will get sent back. They won't be safe. Them getting killed IS THE PLAN. The new DOD leadership is under direct orders to hang them out to dry.

Trump is directly responsible for all the fallout from his poorly planned overreaching EOs.

There is no way around that. He's directly responsible.
