MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A group of Afghan nationals arrived in the Philippines on Monday to process special immigrant visas for their resettlement in the United States, as part of an agreement between Manila and Washington.

The Philippines agreed last July to temporarily host a U.S. immigrant visa processing center for a limited number of Afghan nationals aspiring to resettle in America.

Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Teresita Daza said the Afghan nationals who landed in the Philippines on Monday were provided entry visas. She said they had completed extensive security vetting and undergone full medical screenings prior to their arrival.

The U.S. government will cover the costs for the Afghan nationals’ stay in the Philippines, including their food, housing, security, medical and transportation expenses, she said.

She didn’t specify how many Afghans arrived or how long the visa processing will take. Under the Philippines’ rules, visa applicants can stay for no longer than 59 days.

A senior Philippine official told The Associated Press last year that only 150 to 300 applicants would be accommodated in the Philippines under the “one-time” deal. The official who had knowledge of the negotiations agreed to speak on condition of anonymity because of a lack of authority to speak publicly.

The Afghan nationals seeking resettlement primarily worked for the U.S. government in Afghanistan or were deemed eligible for U.S. special immigrant visas but were left behind when Washington withdrew from the country and Taliban militants took back power in a chaotic period in 2021.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken first relayed the request to his Philippines counterpart in 2022, and President Joe Biden discussed the request with Philippines leader Ferdinand Marcos Jr. when he visited the U.S. last year, Philippine officials said.

Marcos has rekindled relations with the U.S. since winning the presidency by a landslide margin two years ago. In February last year, he allowed an expansion of the American military presence under a 2014 defense agreement in a decision that upset China.

I hope they are Afghan women 🚺
Been deployed to the stan 3 times. Never once saw a female interpreter. Worked with countless Afghan dudes that rarely showered even when they had the opportunity to. Just saw them wash their feet in the sinks everyday though. Other than the poor hygiene they were decent mild mannered dudes.

Sounds like my encounters with afghans there also, one story was cool Ft bliss Tex thanksgiving week getting ready to leave. Two afghan guys brawled one got locked up. I sat next to the guy who got locked up on the plane on the way to Germany. He said they got in a fight because there was an attack being talked about on TV were some US soldiers were harmed the one afghan guy said he loved seeing this. The guy I was sitting next to argued with him about it and then they got into the fight..

He told me he lives in Vegas and loves America, he's so happy to be out of Afghan, he loves to go to Mexico and drink cheap and pick up working girls lol. He told me he almost lost his job because of what happened but he would do it again. That's the kind of immigrants we need. I really hope he didn't get stuck in Afghan during the withdraw a lot of interpreters did sadly enough, it really pisses me off.

They'll probably love the variety of drugs the US has to offer. It ain't just your grandma's opium anymore. Looking forward to the upcoming Florida Afghan high on bath salts body cam footage.

So what is it with Indians and Afghans not taking a shower?

Is it some cultural thing because it gets very cold up there?

Or this is just a poor people thing?

I grew up poor and I used to stink!

those aren't actually afghan women in the OP are they ?

How much did Marcos get from this deal?

Philippines has Muslim population down South, it's filled with ISIS. Should they continue serving Us and fight the Moros?

Which Afghans are the US taking in?
I've encountered a lot of the Hazara here in Oz, and although no doubt it'll take a while for them to reach socioeconomic parity with the general population, they've been doing pretty well for refugees with the first generation and their children (now young adults).
Only time I've seen them make the news was recently when a Uni student managed to get himself lost in the bush for 2 weeks over Christmas with only 2 muesli bars he found in a camping shack to live off. They found him alive and well today apparently.
Academically they seem to be doing quite well in terms of valuing the opportunities afforded. Is college education available for refugees in the US?

It's mainly people that worked for the US in Afghanistan but were left behind.

I did some charity work with refugees when I was in college. Sometimes they dump you in a house or apartment in the bad part of town. There will be some support system and guidance. It is usually connected to some religious organization. You are expected to fend for yourself after a while. Some of them can do it while the others can't due to age or language barrier. It's a bit sad when refugees tell you that they rather go back because America is bad. Living in the hood isn't easy.
