Opinion Theodore Roosevelt Statue is Coming Down

As soon as I saw the title I knew it was this one. Yeah its really problematic, personally I like Teddy so I am biased and I would want it left there but oh man that statute has terrible optics so I don't blame them for removing it. I just hope they replace it with another statute of Teddy.

That statue is in horrible taste and should have been torn down when the rest were. Would like to see it replaced with a more inclusive statue. George Floyd got one, so they could do one for someone like Tamir Rice or Trayvon Martin. Or one representing the lgbtqia+ community would be nice. How about one honoring our first black female VP? Lot's on good options

You're an idiot.

Oof, that has some serious white savior vibes. Unless there's some story behind the artistic decisions made, I can see why it wasn't wanted. The article linked doesn't explain any history behind it, the statue itself or what it's depicting.

Cry harder

There just needs to be careful consideration when making a permanent public message. No one gave a shit about historical or even contemporary oppression of people when most of these statues were placed. The Confederate statues were placed with the intent to oppress.

I think that's a misconception by the right of the left, that the left is excited to judge and hate someone for being wrong. I really don't think that's the case, more often than not because those jerks do exist, but the effort to be considerate is way more important. That self reflection is hugely important, no one is perfect and everyone has blind spots. Sometimes social norms and beliefs change. The important thing is the effort and the humility to look back and reanalyze.

Agreed. People in general are not the best ideas when we have so much more to choose from. Shit comes down all the time.

at this rate, wouldn't be surprised if they destroy Mount Rushmore

If Darth Trump had got his face up there (he thought it was a good idea) it would be gone for sure.

No. It's not about the statue, it's about eliminating history.

I'm normally against tearing down statues but this was done democratically and not by a marxist mob. Plus the statue is in extreme bad taste. Why does this statue need to remain if the people want to remove it?

The most reasoned response.

it is pretty bad

I only know bits and pieces of US history...and really only know Rossevelt from the Night at the Museum movies and that he got shot and finished his speech.

But what was this specific statue meant to celebrate?

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

― George Orwell, 1984

This. History is being erased.

When did we get one of those?

Do you think all people with dark skin are due to African ancestry? Kinda racist.
my bad. i meant poc
You don't really get to ask why, if you supported statues being torn down last year.
Pretty big difference between tearing down statues of racists, slave owners, etc and a man who is a symbol of the racism blacks still face every day

This.
The native American and African are both armed and standing beside him. Teddy was a big time hunter and they are guides. The African is just that not an African American.

You can't explain to the woke crowd, they even tear down anti slave statues.

If that's what you want to believe lol.

taking down a statue of Teddy Roosevelt and he suddenly disappears from every text and photograph in every historical archive in existence, like the end of Back to the Future. I now realize that he is no longer the 26th president. Mission accomplished

I mean can anyone genuinely refute the premise? Teddy's noteworthiness is unquestionable, but that statue has always been problematic. The statue removal isn't an indictment of the man himself but the poor optics of the chosen aesthetic.

Some sound reason. The optics are pretty bad, I admit. You've got the right idea....get rid of this one (maybe museum for keeping) but have another one of just him put up in place. Voila!
