Opinion Theodore Roosevelt Statue is Coming Down

Pretty big difference between tearing down statues of racists, slave owners, etc and a man who is a symbol of the racism blacks still face every day

lol George Floyd is not a symbol of that, at all. But anyways, the precedent has been set. It doesn't matter the context behind the statues. It's been established that if there is a statue that offends you, for whatever reason, you are allowed to illegally rip it down and destroy it and face no legal consequences. If you supported all that shit last year, you don't get to complain when a statue of somebody you like gets ripped down.

True. Just ask the idiot that defaced the rainbow colors in the crosswalk the other day. He faced no consequences at all. You should go try it with the Floyd statue and tell me how that works out for you.

Sorry this is news to you, but times change and people evolve. We are not going to prop up people like that anymore (those in the removed statues).

I don't support illegally tearing down statues like you do. George Floyd's statue is a true monument to stupidity on so many levels, but I'm against damaging or defacing it. But if I did, there's a good chance I'd be murdered right there. At the very least, I'd be doxed and my life would be ruined. You know, the kind of consequences that nobody faced last year after illegally tearing down all those statues.

Whatever that's supposed to mean.

They actually look a bit like ol' Roosevelt himself in his younger days:

That's a 19-year old man. Life was rough back in the day.

Almost everybody who says they're 40 now looks about 22. You can tell how softer things have gotten. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing to be honest.

I'm normally against tearing down statues but this was done democratically and not by a marxist mob. Plus the statue is in extreme bad taste. Why does this statue need to remain if the people want to remove it?

In what way was it done democratically and why does the statue need to come down other than an arbitrary sense of "poor taste"?

I mean can anyone genuinely refute the premise? Teddy's noteworthiness is unquestionable, but that statue has always been problematic. The statue removal isn't an indictment of the man himself but the poor optics of the chosen aesthetic.

Why is it "problematic".

I thought I saw that there was some kind of a vote. It doesn't need to come down but I can understand people wanting to take down that statue due to its poor taste.

Made by unelected bureaucrats who were appointed to their positions. That's the opposite of a democratic decision.

Should have just taken the Indian and black off the statue imo.

"Apparently it displays dominance of a white man over black people and native Americans."

It definitely displays dominance of a white man over black people and native Americans.

Being mounted has long been a display of authority and regality over others.

This symbolism dates back to ancient times.

He lost in Rocky 1 and Mr T inflicted significantly more damage during their fight. He also beat an even lighter skin Russian!

<WhoJeff>
Hell, he even had to learn to "fight black" from his former rival to come back and beat Clubber in the rematch.

"Whatsamatta wit you, man!"

Goddamn, what a great film series

Helen Keller, Rosa Parks, and a Confederate general. One of these things is not like the others. Not sure how that had anything to do with socialism. I don't think it's the left ignoring history. So he was still in government after he served the Confederacy, Mo is aware racism was very much alive in Alabama's government after the Civil War, right?

That statue is in horrible taste and should have been torn down when the rest were. Would like to see it replaced with a more inclusive statue. George Floyd got one, so they could do one for someone like Tamir Rice or Trayvon Martin. Or one representing the lgbtqia+ community would be nice. How about one honoring our first black female VP? Lot's on good options

How about Heman?

Oh they know otherwise, they are just mad that overt celebration of White supremacy is being taken down, so they come up with the lame ass excuse that history is being rewritten.
No matter the side you are on, it is happening. You can debate if it is correct or not, but it IS happening. Things that were celebrated are now cancelled. People have made history fit their Narrative..."Columbus was evil", "So and so had slaves", "The South was nothing but racist slave owners", "The rebel flag symbolizes racism", . Whole curriculums have changed. Critical Race Theory, All white people are evil stuff. "Ghandi was a :eek::eek::eek:phile racist" . Its out there. Like I said, you can debate the correctness of it, but not the actual happening. Statues are being taken down, and some for no reason. Take politics out, and the facts are there.

Most of this is Republicans fabricating outrage. CRT isn't happening except in some colleges, but a conservative documentarian ran across the term and literally crafted the narrative Republicans are going to campaign on next year. Fox has been caught planting people in school meetings to rage against CRT. Maybe if that's going to be their campaign, they should list schools where this is actually an issue. I'm not saying there aren't some crazy teachers out there, and they should be nuked until they glow and then shot in the dark, but I'd like evidence that this is a national problem.

And taking down confederate statues is a course correct. They went up with Jim Crow and the Lost Cause (decades after the war) to put black people back in their place, and those people finally have the political capital to get them taken down. It's interesting to note that they still don't have the political capital to remove a bust of a former wizard of the KKK from an actual state capitol. A commission was formed to make decisions like that, it voted to remove the bust, and Republicans not only blocked the decision, they submitted a bill to remove that commission, because fuck black people.

FYI: History is always being rewritten.
