The Williams Guard: A Compendium (GIF & Image Heavy) Long Post!

Daaaaaaang! I don't use Williams guard but I'm glad I read over that stuff so I know what to look out for should I wind up there. This is a phenomenal breakdown of it! Hopefully you can do more stuff like this down the line and we'll have a "Gambledub's Compendium" sticky soon enough!

Thanks! I guess i better get to work!!! :D

im also watching through a bunch of old competitions to try find the williams guard being used.

if anyone has specific examples of it being used in comps, rolls or fights it would be appreciated!

Edit: posted some examples at the bottom of the reference section.

dude, you are a saint.

didn't know that this position was named Williams Guard.
i have seen Dean Lister use this before and i always thought that this is perfect for mma and self defence.

your welcome!

well damn... 3000 views and 65 posts! i never imagined this would be so popular in such a short time! so you might be stoked to hear that the compendium #2 is currently officially in progress! :icon_chee

Fantastic work. I really like the Williams guard, but haven't really progressed beyond sloppily going for an omoplata from there. Now I have no excuse for being an ignoramus about it. Thanks a lot for doing this. Will def go for it non stop in training this evening.

Looking forward to part 2 :D

Awesome. Anyone who likes playing closed guard should know their way around the Williams guard a bit, especially if we're talking no gi.

agreed! a little known & massively underrated position!

Seriously, why isn't this stickied. It is such an informative thread with a lot of useful information that can help many people.

TS, are you planning to do threads for other guards?

This is what I am excited for. I have focused almost entirely on DLR in the gi recently, and we have recently reintroduced (very few) nogi classes. I feel lost rolling in nogi now, but with this thread, I'll go back to work on my SWG. I played around with it as a white belt and had good success then. With this kind of comprehensive study, I'll certainly find mileage out of it.

Maybe you should hook up with Aesopian and Zenphobia making the .epub3 e-books. You have the groundwork laid. It would put it into a more official format than a fleeting forum thread, and help Artechoke expand their available media. Get their style of instructional more recognition. You know, if they were agreeable to it.

thanks! Im working on another "compendium" at the moment, at this stage its unlikely that i will do another one on the guard, for a while at least. The Williams Guard is ideal to break down, because their isn't a great deal of info around, and what is available is scattered around.

However other guard styles (say De La Riva, Butterfly etc.) are either widely circulated and have/could be broken down by someone who knows them better and/or could explain it better! then on the flipside of that their are other guard positions that are highly specialized that aren't really broken down apart from specific instructionals.

Take for example the "Octopus Guard" i have seen 3-4 techniques shown outside of Edwardo Telles' dvd. For this post i did use 3 instructional dvd's and 1 book as reference material, but there was only 1 technique in each of them, i think that is justifiable under fair use seeing as this is non-profit reference/teaching material. However rehashing a released instructional or even a chapter of an instructional would be hard to justify, probably illegal and i wouldn't feel right about it.

that being said i can never say never, i did consider doing some guard work and if i make enough of these things there will definitely be some more guard work!

thats definately an idea, the problem is im going to be very busy soon so i dont really want to make commitments to myself let alone other people. also i kinda wanna put free info out there!

I also live all the way over in New Zealand which makes logistics hard, as well as studying at uni full time in a competitive law degree, working from 5 to 11.30 at night and still trying to slot in training during the day! then trying to find somewhere to film, training partners etc becomes really difficult!

I think for the meantime im gonna start a blog with all the compendiums etc, posted on it. but if Artechoke like it their welcome to use it (you couldn't sell it, because none of the gifs or images are mine!) or if anyone needs help with a project like this just ask! i would love to see stuff like this pop up!

good luck with the experimenting with the williams guard let me know how it goes!

Free is good.

I think we all really appreciate the effort you put into this. It basically is already a mini-book on the SWG.

Much thanks!

Wow thorough write up, don't have time now but wow!

It ends with my vid, can someone tell me if my Arm Weave position is what he is calling El Nino position and is that a big thing or what? I don't really follow Gi guys or latest XYZ stuff unless they make it work in No Gi or MMA.

Thanks

I think my part 1 was posted, I did do a part two vid fyi, sorry haven't checked the entire thread yet just scrolled first page.

Been wanting to sit down and work my way through this post for awhile. Just had time to sit down and do it. Very nicely organized. You really did a great job on this.
