Economy The [Wall / Government Shutdown] Megathread

Would you approve of Trump using emergency powers to build his wall?

"Emergency"

It's not good that millions of you are willing to hand this much power to the executive branch. It's essentially a trashing of the Constitution, making emergency powers an arbitrary thing that can be declared despite there not being an emergency. This is not something to play around with, this is actual third-world crap and a serious threat to Democracy. It's not a game.

After intelligence and maturity, I think actual principle and foresight is what most separates non-Trump supporters from Trump supporters.

Hate to break it to you, but that's where you're completely wrong. If a wall keeps ONE murdering MS13 member or fentanyl dealer out, or prevents a drunk illegal from being behind the wheel and hurting myself or a family member, the wall is worth it.

This is the level of thought typical of Trump supporters.

"If pissing away $50 billion dollars prevents ONE crime, it's worth it."

But don't bother with using that $50 billion (or exponentially less) toward a purpose that would prevent exponentially more crimes and improve American living generally, like investing in education, or affordable housing, or universal healthcare - or any of the infinite policy proposals that would use the money for efficiently that building a useless fucking wall that can be easily climbed over or dug beneath. At this point, it could take sacrificing a quarter of GDP and have next to zero actual effect, but you dolts would say that microscopic benefit made it worth it.

Mexico isn't paying for it, the idea of building a wall completely across the border is stupid. Now that the shut down is over surely he isn't dumb enough to go back to that, so what else can he do besides using his emergency power to build it?

Mexico will pay for a Wall and Drain the Swamp were just campaign schtick. I don't think he cares either way as long as he can keep the base voting for him.

Yeah.

Draining the Swamp was always a pipe-dream.

There's ALWAYS going to be corruption in our government no matter what.

It sucks but that's the way shit is.

I do think that we need more barriers at the border though. I would still prefer that but not *only* that.

I want those barriers to be supplemented by other types of Border Security like Technology and better training for Border Patrol agents.

Hell...I like the Steel Slats idea and would like for them to be installed where we currently have barriers located(mainly to re-inforce them) and in critical areas where barriers are needed.

He can't go back to the shutdown.

I was floored when I saw how much the Shutdown cost. That was about the same amount that he was looking for in regards to Wall funding. damn.

anyway, he HAS TO go the Emergency Powers route to save face for his base (I, being one of the many in that base, feel he has already proven his point) going forward. A shutdown is no longer an option.

Careful now.

Painting a large group of America with that broad stroke is what fucked you in 2016. Your best move is not to shake the beehive and allow the majority of America to simply sigh and sleep.

It was accurate then and it's accurate now. And that advice is paternalistic excuse-making bullshit just like it was bullshit in 2016 when so many said "we voted for an incompetent swindler dip shit because you were calling us dumb for supporting an incompetent swindler dip shit!"

That's cute and all but the end result is you took an L.

Yes, we all did. But the alternative would have been coddling them and not objecting to their support, resulting in the exact same electoral outcome. At least with the first way the adults in the room can say they tried and didn't roll over.

He doesn't get to decide what emergency powers are. That is what the courts will be deciding.

He can declare there is a national emergency because he had a tough time taking a shit this morning. That doesn't mean he gets to be dictator.

HE is responsible for executing law and for providing security. He CAN and SHOULD determine what he wants to do in the face of a national crisis. Because you feel it's not a priority or emergency doesn't mean that it isn't.

Billions are already spent on all the things you've mentioned, and throwing more money at them just pads individual pockets more. "They can dig tunnels or catapult themselves over the wall!!! DERP!" proves that walls serve to stop people from simply walking across the border, setting up shop, and leeching off my tax dollars. If they can dig a tunnel, then good for them. They get caught, the tunnel gets filled, and they spend the next weeks or months making another tunnel - but they just can't walk across the border, set up shop, and leech off my tax dollars. Pregnant anchor baby mom wants to get a grappling hook and try to scale a wall? Good for her, but it keeps out the other 100 that can't do it. Common sense is what you and your leftist brood always had trouble with. No one said a wall would stop 100% of the problem, but it will do enough to deter or stop MOST of them. Oh, and fuck you for implying that crimes committed against any of the actual citizens here by illegal aliens is ok because it didn't happen to you - yet.

Then you pay for it. :D
I will, and so will you. Taxes. It's better to pay for a wall here than to give hundreds of billions to a country like Iran so they can start up a nuke program like your lord and savior Obama, or give billions to NK so they can do the same as did Clinton.

Common sense with you lefties is a rare thing indeed.

Wasn't that large of a group, it was because about 78,000 voters across three states voted his way, despite him losing the popular vote by 3 million, now the Dems have Trump's presidency helping their chances. Trump better hire Comey to find another of Weiner's laptops.

"Nearly 6-in-10 voters — 57 percent — disapprove of Trump's job performance, compared to the 40 percent that approve. In addition, 54 percent of voters blame Trump and Republicans on Capitol Hill for the government shutdown. Only 35 percent blame congressional Democrats."

He doesn't have to be any good. His opponent just has to be worse.

Need evidence?

lol. he is an abysmal failure at executing the law in his own cabinet, let alone for the nation.

He doesnt think its an emergency. Pretty obvious by the way he did jack shit for years. he sees it as an opprotunity to pander to his moron base. And that he is absolutely right about. Trump himself said that it will be up to the courts if he declares an emergency.
