Would you approve of Trump using emergency powers to build his wall?

Supposedly that is what he may think about doing in 3 weeks. I would love to see how that goes and I don't think it would bode well for him. Not getting his way on the border wall is not a national emergency at all
By the very nature of him being able to talk about it being a 'national emergency' for now months on end, proves its not a 'National Emergency' in the way the powers are granted.

There are 'separation of powers' for a reason. the Constitution wants checks and balances on a POTUS. The Congress has budget power by design. Its not an accident.

But the framers of the constitution could foresee situations of Emergency where a POTUS would need an exception to act fast (such as natural disaster) and where the POTUS would not have time to seek Congressional support. So the powers of Emergency are very limited and very clear.

By the very virtue of Trump delaying the declaring of this emergency by months, since he first brought it up as an option PROVES it is not an emergency aand he could indeed bring it to Congress and seek funding the proper way.

The Emergency Powers are not intended to help a POTUS get around a Congress that does not agree with him and is properly using the powers of check and balance. And there is no way for the supreme court to agree this is an emergency when the POTUS himself has sabotaged that line by not calling it the first time he mentioned it.

I don't follow politics as much as you guys do. But why did Trump not get this taken care of when he held more power in the first two years of his presidency? Seems odd to do it after dems make progress after the mid-terms

Simply put. Trump =/= GOP.

Trump's big campaign promise was the Border Wall. It has never been a GOP platform item.

He was never going to get #nevertrumpers to sign off on his wall, just like he was never going to get the DNC to fund his Wall.

At least when Trump is grandstanding at the Dems it's the true opposition. Trump grandstanding against the GOP would have been suicidal. Impeachment would have been more of a possibility.

He never consolidated the Republicans.

off topic. sometimes I just laugh at how trump talks, he said he has decided to open the government and people will get paid very quickly or as soon as possible. Just how he said very quickly or as soon as possible is just weird to me

Why am I so confident, well, today is proof enough.

He did NOT want to give in to the Democrats, but that is precisely what happened, which is a definite barometer regarding what is going to happen in 3 weeks.

But to those of you who think that Trump will get his way...bump this if Trump "proudly" shuts down the government again due to another wall temper tantrum.

***I will certainly bump this thread once my prediction comes true, which is ABSOLUTELY will.***

This deal no one wins not democrats not republicans it's their Wall Street private jet owners scared to death to fly their private jets who are the winners. If the air traffic controllers had not become part of this debate this shutdown would have continued. hedge fund billionaires where likely calling both parties threatening to end supporting each party likely caused them to come up with this temporary fix.

he will never do another shut down.

he had to dick duck and accept the most humiliating defeat to start it up this time as he saw the Dem's were never going to cave and the anger towards him was growing.

In 3 weeks he will be forced to make another meaningless gesture to pretend he still has some power and that not all of it was handed to POTUS Pelosi and that will be to try and use his 'Emergency' powers. That will end up in a long court battle and another defeat for him and no wall.

He will either shut it down again or declare emergency. I agree it will most likely be an emergency and decided in the courts.

Nancy is in the same boat as Trump. Neither one can pass any legislation without the other. But when you consider the turncoats train previously had in the senate, he really isn't losing anything.

Trump just tweeted:
"I wish people would read or listen to my words on the Border Wall. This was in no way a concession. It was taking care of millions of people who were getting badly hurt by the Shutdown with the understanding that in 21 days, if no deal is done, it’s off to the races!"
