Economy The [Wall / Government Shutdown] Megathread

Would you approve of Trump using emergency powers to build his wall?

  • Total voters
    92
  • Poll closed .
So u admit he would have? And flake? I could go do some googling to find their statements about the wall...or we can just agree they were against it

Are we writing alternative history fanfiction?

I can find statements from the president on both sides of literally every issue. Actions matter more.

Who wants a disarmed population? Who wants speech shut down? Who wants larger govt? Who wants more of people's income extorted? ...

GOP is pushing for bigger government. These border towns contain private property and the owners don’t want the wall. It would take the government seizing lots of land from citizens to get the job done. Also, the voters picked a Congress this midterms that wouldn’t use their tax dollars to fund the wall. Trump is testing strategies to circumnavigate this balance of branches and take executive powers to another level to extort tax money for his goal. That’s trending the compete opposite of small government. It’s executive overreach.

Who wants to shut down speech? Trump on numerous occasions during his campaign proposed legislating new laws making it easier to sue others for bad press. Literally called for new laws that would limit the 1st amendment, so you he takes first place in that catoegory. This is the brand of politics conservatives picked and in no manner is it concerned with small government.

By a wide margin Americans blame Trump and the GOP for the shutdown.

Before we go any further, I am just going to say that this is a WaPo-ABC poll . So Trumpers will immediately dismiss it and say 'polls also said Hillary was winning'.

Ok with that out of the way:

American Jews vote and fund all those things.

You want to keep playing silly games of painting people with broad strokes, well, so can I.

If all Mexicans are represented by their voting preferences, then so are all Jews. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I'm sure Chuck and Nancy saw that clip of Trump at the border where a border guard was telling the camera what had happened earlier that day, or the day before.
He mentioned they detained a very large number of people trying to get over the border which contained people from many countries, not just Central America.
Some of these people were from India, Pakistan & Romania! Unfortunately there were quite a number of others that got away from the border guards too. All that was just ONE day!

I don't understand why the Democrats can't see this as a huge problem for the country? How is it NOT a crisis? People from many countries around the world are trying to get into America illegally.
The fact that the Dems don't give a shit and are ignoring the stats and what this border guard related, really shows why they don't want a wall.
1/ They don't want Trump to 'win.'[at anything.]
2/They know walls work, the wall would stem the flow of potential future Democrat voters who aren't in the country yet, or reduce the number of them to a trickle.

It is obvious that a barrier is needed, yet Chuck & Nancy choose to ignore what border officials have to say. These two only care for the Democrat Party, that's all, and they are consumed with hatred for Trump.

Odd considering they agreed to the wall before. It's almost like you are lying.

Just in: Canada lives up to its reputation yet again,

Canadian air traffic controllers buy pizza for U.S. peers going unpaid during shutdown
MONTREAL -- Canadian air traffic controllers have bought hundreds of pizzas for their American counterparts over the past few days in what has become an industry-wide show of support during the U.S. government's partial shutdown.

Peter Duffey, the head of the Canadian Air Traffic Control Association, said the initiative began Thursday when employees at Edmonton's control centre took up a collection to buy pies for controllers in Anchorage, Alaska.

Other facilities across Canada decided to join in, and the idea snowballed.

"The next thing we knew, our members were buying pizzas left, right and centre for the colleagues in the U.S," Duffey said Sunday in a phone interview.

"As it stands right now, I believe we're up to 36 facilities that have received pizza from Canada, and that number is growing by the hour."

He said one anonymous Canadian donor contributed $500 to the pizza fund, while another single-handedly bought lunch for two facilities in Phoenix, Arizona, to thank them for "taking care of all the snowbirds from Western Canada who go down for the winter."

Sigh, from Fox News

"White House chief of staff John Kelly, who is set to leave the Trump administration within days, flatly asserted in remarks published Sunday that the president's proposed border project "is not a wall" and that all plans for a concrete wall were abandoned long ago -- directly contradicting the White House's repeated claims.

"To be honest, it’s not a wall,” Kelly said in an interview with The Los Angeles Times. “The president still says ‘wall’ — oftentimes frankly he’ll say ‘barrier’ or ‘fencing,’ now he’s tended toward steel slats. But we left a solid concrete wall early on in the administration, when we asked people what they needed and where they needed it."

Let's start here: can you define what "the wall" is?

Dec. 2, 2015: At a rally in Virginia, a young boy asked him, "What are the walls going to be made out of?" Trump replied, "I'll tell you what it's going to be made of. It's going to be made of hardened concrete, and it's going to be made out of rebar and steel. And — you know, it's so easy, that's what I do."

Jan. 18, 2016: "They have no idea how to do it. Whereas with me it's easy — that's like easy. When you build buildings like I build buildings, believe me, walls are easy. No windows, no nothing — precast concrete going very high."

Aug. 11, 2016: "The politicians would come up to me, and they'd say, 'You know, Donald, you can't build the wall.' I said, 'You have to be kidding. You have to be kidding. Concrete plank, you have to be kidding. Precast, precast, right? Boom. Bing. Done. Keep going.' "

Nov. 2, 2017. "You know, you think we're going to build a nice, simple concrete wall, but it's not that simple."<TheDonald>

Dec. 28, 2018. "We are not building a Concrete Wall, we are building artistically designed steel slats."

Never been to a non white country have you. Its not some kind of anti white hell

Greoric doesn't see race, man. And by that, I mean he goes out of his way to look at non whites, due to their inferior intellects.

Yup, as I said upthread people should not be lured into allowing Trump and his Trumpsters to pretend the dispute was ever over fencing or any type of integrated border protection which was already under way by Bush and Obama.

That is not what Trump was suggesting and it was why Trump would not spend the ~$1.5B allocated and sitting earlier this year on any fencing. He was against any Fence.

This is what Trump wanted.

This was Trumps wall

And it was to replace the fences. And it was to be paid for by Mexico with one big check. And when Mexico said no Trump said we have all the leverage and will make them pay by withholding remittances and other things. The voters were going to see the true Art of the Deal and Trumps lauded negotiation skills as he easily broke and forced Mexico to pay for it.

And in February he was going to (and probably still could) get S25 billion that he could have done or built anything he wanted with, until Ann Coulter and Breitbart started calling him "amnesty Don". Trump has now twice allowed doctrinaire right wing ivory tower idealists like Ann Coulter to prevent him from being the great negotiator he views himself to be.

It's probably good that the uncorroborated claims of a single border patrol member don't dictate billions of dollars worth of policy.....
