Television The Star Trek Thread V6.0

Just my guess. I think Kurtzman was initially all in on animation, and was going to try to have many animated shows, but is now seeing how long the process takes. LDX looks like traditional quality animation, which takes forever to produce. The team for the Nickelodeon show, specializing in a mix of animation, with CGI that can be made faster and cheaper, which will be key for kids focused show. The next short treks are both animation, so I will be curious to see the quality and how they are received. Remember their plan is to basically have a new trek show ready to go, year round.

Actually I think it's the reverse. The Nickelodeon show will not hit until 2022 apparently:

Lower Decks certainly also takes time to animate, and well, I certainly am fine with them not committing to dates before they are sure (cp. the Discovery situation a couple years ago).

With Nickelodeon, I would assume that once they have this thing going, making additional animation may not be so expensive and time-consuming.

Star Trek: Picard - Countdown Issue #1 by IDW

The comic book series Star Trek: Picard - Countdown is due to drop this Wednesday, November 27th, from IDW. The series is a prequel to the new Picard series and is expected to give fans important background information about what drove Picard to retire from Starfleet. Ahead of the release, Syfy Wire spoke to writer Mike Johnson about the upcoming series.

Johnson also wrote 2009’s Countdown prequel to Star Trek, the first J.J. Abrams movie. He compared that experience to this one, noting that it’s more secretive this time. But he said that was because the producers of Picard want to preserve the element of surprise. “And,” he said, “that extends to any ancillary materials, like the comics and the novels.”

Johnson was able to give a few details about the plot of the comic series, though. He said, “This story takes place a fair number of years before the events of the Picard show. We couldn't do something that happens right before the show without actually spoiling stuff. [...] This story takes place after The Next Generation, but before he's retired from Starfleet.”

And what’s Picard up to? Johnson said, “We start to lay in some of the backgrounds for why he ultimately decides to leave Starfleet. He's an admiral, we see his new ship, we might see a familiar face or two and we see what he's been doing since the end of Nemesis.”

Johnson also revealed that the comic series will introduce us to new characters who will turn up in Star Trek: Picard. He said, “We're going to be meeting a couple of characters for the first time in the comic that will appear in the show. These are new characters and there are actually brief glimpses of them in the trailers.”

The Syfy Wire piece also has a few preview pages from issue #1 of Star Trek: Picard - Countdown. Otherwise, you can see them for yourself when it comes out on Wednesday.

Ya I knew the Nick show wouldn't come out for a while, since the showrunners have a number of other shows going on at the same time. I also just read that Nickelodeon programming was added this week to CBS all access.

Picard : Countdown comes out tomorrow. These 3 comics will be the lead up to the Picard series. It's currently the number 1 selling comic on Amazon.

It's already out here. Just read it. Good stuff.

Are comic books really essential now to enjoying a television program?

I think it will really add a layer of depth you will otherwise probably not have. Of course the series needs to deliver on its own still, but what happens in these 3 short comics was announced as Canon, so it's relevant imo

You people with your canon.;)
I still say, respect most (broadly, over many things) canon but since some of it is junk, and other shows/ films have ignored the moronic elements introduced earlier...

It leads to "Well, we've gotta stick this in there. The fans will be pissed if they don't see--"

I would be incredibly upset if I were to see a stupid Reman... but since they stupidly destroyed the Romulan empire...

Well, I think the best way to know whether you are likely to enjoy the product they will put out currently is reading that comic. If you can wait, good for you. I can't :D

I've a friend that watched TNG with me as it aired; it's near our hearts.

He won't even watch the trailers, he wants all of it to be a surprise for him.

He doesn't express any trepidation, and it's all I feel.
I'm less about what they do well and more about how they might fuck it up. He recommended STD to me, and said I'd love the Harry Mudd fan service ep, said I'd be able to tell the actor had studied the character.

If he hadn't told me it was supposed to be Mudd, and they just called the character by some other name, I would never have guessed it.

Nervous but hopeful

They are linking all comics books and other media, to tie into the books and Canon, so it a cool way to find out about the story

It is. At the same time, I kind of see it as a cash grab. I'm cynical, old and bitter.
I see it same way

Pay for more material just to be able to understand the show?

What the fuck is that

Once again Clippy saying truth

I really do like the idea of books but they should be separate

Well there is potential, and they're giving the fans what they want. So it will be with Picard-- might be good,

might be *sigh*
