Television The Star Trek Thread V6.0

I watched the first episode of the Lower Deck and it definitely isn't Star Trek, but I really liked it. It's pissing off a lot of Star Trek fanboys though.

The Orville's Lasting Impressions gets my vote for best Star Trek episode during that span.

I'm still bummed that Alara isn't coming back.

Is it ever coming back?
Season 3 has already been made, and it's only a matter of time before Hulu airs it.

Unfortunately, multiple independent sources ***Broussard.gif*** have confirmed from unofficial inside sources that Hulu has decided not to renew it. On the other hand, its cancellation (or lack of renewal, rather) hasn't been officially confirmed, and there's even a producer of the show on social media posting titillating tweets that suggest it still has life without confirming or denying anything.

Alexander Siddig has had a fan club for years called Sid City. He has recently taken it to youtube during covid. Basically twice a week, he has an open zoom video chat with a set number of fans, and he invites fellow actors and they basically do giant Q&As and meet and greets. He has also been taking fan submissions of stories or episodes, and he will get another actor to play out the story. It's pretty cool seeing such a down to earth guy, interact and have fun with his fans.

Here's a recent episode he did with Andrew Robinson, reading a fan-submitted script

I was gonna post this, decided to see if someone else did first. There's four episodes, I enjoyed them all.

@Clippy , have you listened to these?

Nah

Cliffs
It's set 20 something years after the end of DS9. Garak is the head of Cardassia, comes down with a virus, one that's infecting his people, enlists Bashir's help, everything is on the DL. Jake Sisko is involved, Kira and Quark make appearances. Beyond that I'd have to get spoiler-y

It's pretty good in my opinion. The actors do an excellent job at reprising their roles all these years later. There's some great twists too

They have not finished filming Season 3. They have only filmed 5 episodes, and started the 6th when they were forced to shut down.

I still haven't seen a convincing source that it has been canceled

Did they really make Picard a bitch? Is the show SJW nonsense with a Star Trek paint job?
No, he a angry and bitter nearly hundred year old man. Throughout the season he regains the old Picard spirit.

Most the negative reviews I have seen have been only by people who watched the trailer, and refuse to watch now, yet give a review of the series. I love all the background details and throwbacks to the movies they have in it. You can tell the show runner is a huge Trek fan.

Watched the first episode of Lower Decks. While it wasn’t bad per se it wasn’t good either. I’ll give them some credit that unlike Discovery and Picard they’re trying to stay true to the TNG to Voyager era aesthetic from the way computer screens look to the use of some classic aliens like those blue guys that use the little breathing apparatus thing (one competed against Wesley in an academy entrance exam in season 1 or 2 of TNG, another one joined the crew on the episode where Riker was first officer of a Klingon ship). That being said, I didn’t find it funny in the slightest, and part of me thought they were trying a little too hard with the fan service, in particular at the very end of the episode when the girl starts listing TOS and TNG characters. I mean come on.

6/10

Yep, agree with the 6/10 rating. This is clearly a show (imo) for Star Trek fans. Whether it is Star Trek? Tbd. But they are doing some stuff good.

I think I will like it for what it is.

At this point I am willing to give it a fair shot, surprisingly. I hated literally everything about Discovery and Picard, but at least this show feels like it takes place in the Star Trek universe. However, what remains to be seen is whether or not they can deliver on an entertaining show. To me, it could be really good if they found some way to capture the spirit of say Futurama. But so far I haven’t even smiled at any of their attempts to make a joke.

Yeah I laughed maybe two or three times, which is not bad, but given the amount of times I was probably supposed to laugh, they tried a bit hard.

But they might still tell relevant stories with the format.

Btw I saw critics complain that the show is not SJWist enough because it "doesn't seem to care about anything". I rather found Discovery and Picard annoying partly because they seemed to brute force some issues that Star Trek has literally always adressed, but in a much smarter and more subtle way. So let's see.

It's a disgrace to not only Picard's legacy, but Star Trek period. That can be a subjective thing, though I dont know how any ST fan can appreciate how the canon is bastardized.

Aside from all that the show is a mess. The writing is infantile, and the pacing is all over the place. Characters are poorly developed, just hollow tropes.

Lower Decks is Kurtzman's garbage crescendo, though I bet he gives us an encore with Disco 3. He must have an ironclad contract, or have dirt on someone.

If there's one bright spot of potential, it's Pike, Spock and #1 from Discovery. I have little faith if Secret Hideout is in charge, but it's their best bet to get Trek back on track.

Alara is such a great character, huge loss for the show. Hopefully she plays some role in S3, and they get her back for S4, if there is one. Open that chequebook! Her replacement grew on me, but she's still forgettable.

Trekmovie.com with a review, obviously full of spoilers, so I recommend you spend the 25 minutes on watching before you read this. Still some Spoiler free excerpts:

When assessing an adult animated comedy, the most important criteria is the humor, and Star Trek: Lower Decks is funny, bordering on uproarious. The humor on the show works on a number of levels, with sight gags, character moments, and witty dialog. And the jokes keep coming, with Mike McMahan trying to pack as much funny as possible into this premiere; some may even think it is too much and he should slow down the pace.

The comedy should work well with Star Trek super-fans, casual fans, and even those new to the franchise. This leaves some elements as a bit of special bonus for those in the know, although at times the show has flirted too much on the meta, dangerously tapping on the force field of that fourth wall.

(...)

A lot of attention to detail has been made to fit Lower Decks into the TNG era. The show is made to be part of the canon of Star Trek, and the creative team for this comedy are taking that very seriously. Inside and out, the USS Cerritos fits the part as a ship dedicated to the less-glamorous task of second contact, and the crew manifests the diversity that makes up the United Federation of Planets. Even in their cartoon forms, the Vulcans, Andorians, Benzites, and others are all recognizable. The episode is also worth a re-watch, as there are lots of little Trek details and gags you may not even notice your first time through.

Even the crisis-of-the-week (...) feels straight out of the Trek trope handbook. While it might have been a bit clichéd as the plot of a live-action drama, it worked perfectly as the B-story for an animated comedy focused on the ensigns.

Although it is an entirely new genre of show, Lower Decks also fits many of the conventions of the TNG era shows, including the tone, style, and episodic structure of the stories. It is ironic, but this animated comedy feels more like traditional Star Trek than the darker and highly-serialized Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard.
