Television The Star Trek Thread V6.0

Anyone else think the Borg Queen was hot?
Did you ever see the 80's horror film "Ghost Story?"

There hasn’t been a decent episode of Star Trek in 15 years.

That's not true. There have been decent Discovery episodes. There also have been decent Picard episodes.

The problem is that there are too few, and the problem is that unfortunately there seems to be the desire to redefine Star Trek for a new generation. The Orville clearly shows that it is possible to capture what Star Trek is about. Star Trek, that's TNG, DS9, VOY and partially ENT. If you watch these series, it is almost impossible to not get it.
I don't really mind the visual updates too much. I do mind when the heart and spirit is affected, and when action/pacing are an end in themselves.

My expectations for Lower Decks are low, it is not even broadcast here in Europe. But my hope is that it delivers what Orville delivered: actual Star Trek masquerading as comedy.

I don't know yet how the animation style will affect me. But I think I can deal.

I disagree that any of Picard or Discovery was decent Star Trek as opposed to maybe just decent TV, but if someone likes those shows I’ll allow them that, but I watched every episode of both shows and was not impressed. I didn’t think it holds up as “real” Star Trek, nor does it come close to holding a candle to some of the very high quality TV that’s come out over the past 10-20 years.

My expectations for Lower Decks is unbelievably low. I don’t mind that it’s animated, as I though the old Star Trek animated series from the 70s was well made, as my understanding is that some episodes were basically adaptations of potential unused scripts from a fourth season of TOS that never got made. The one where Spock goes back in time to save his younger self from death in particular was classic Trek through and through. But nothing I’ve seen since Enterprise ended shows me that the people that are responsible for making the show know or care what Star Trek is even about.

it's clear that this new content is passionless people throwing science out the window just trying to pump out any content they have and fraudulently strapping the logo on

none of these episodes hold a candle to even the most mediocre episodes of the original shows

There are single episodes where I clearly disagree. To name one example: 2x02 of Discovery. Maybe not the best episode ever, but clearly Star Trek imo.

I get the overall sentiment.

That's also not true. And a bit dishonest given you didn't watch? (Unless you did by now, in which case I apologize.)

Spock's brain as an example was a truly atrocious episode. Discovery had several episodes that were both better TV and better Star Trek.

Despite that, I do feel at home with Orville and don't with Picard and Disco. Still gonna give Lower Decks a pirating chance.

I did watch all of picard and it was atrocious

I never gave discovery the time of day

But that's the difference

You have to go out of your way to cite bad episodes of the original shows

They were few and far between

This new content you have to go out of your way to find a half decent episode

You know I've been watching shows on my second computer while I'm working from home

Shows that I never want to watch on my own time haha

Maybe I'll take this opportunity to watch discovery so I can properly discuss it

@Clippy Picard starts better than Discovery imo, but then went downhill rather fast. Discovery has its moments and is, at least imo, by and large undeniably Star Trek (something the later episodes of Picard I can not say about with certainty). I say that despite the pacing, which is too much, some over-the-top acting and enhancements to Canon where I understand it when people get nervous.

I will say I have had enough re-inventing. Orville is what I hoped for, maybe with less goofiness. But there is still hope because there is lots of content lined up.

@JDragon Orville has been the most interesting thing since real Star Trek ended

Actually never give that show a chance for years because I hate Seth MacFarlane haha

I regret it and it also makes me sad that apparently season 3 is the last one?

What turns me off about discovery is it look so radically different from a once beloved show

And it seemingly ruins everything

Just reading about Orville likely getting cancelled. Well fuck.

But generally speaking: live action TV doesn't really seem to be on the agenda.

Well they are healing some rifts in the Canon. And actually making Kurtzman responsible for the Spore drive is a bit unfair. You need to check the timeline there. I think Season 3 of Discovery will be the first that you can fully attribute to his influence.

Canon “enhancements”

I still can't believe they added mushroom space travel to the story

It seems like just some lazy thing to get them from point a to b

Skip all the drives let's get straight to the action

how can they go back before Kirk and give them better technology than any future storylines lol

I never got that

I've watched every Star Trek show and movie and even the original cartoon

But discovery looks like it's not even trying to fit in the universe which always turned me off

It's literally the only official Star Trek content I haven't watched

Once again proving, the only great Star Trek content these days is coming out of RLM
