The Simpsons Was Always Overrated as Hell.

Not a good TV show. At all. It was popular in it's prime because there were no other crude cartoon comedies out there. But can The Simpsons even be considered crude? It really isn't. Shows like Family Guy and American Dad are leaps and bounds better than The Simpsons. There was simply no comedies similar to compete with The Simpsons at that time.

When Family Guy gained steam and took over, it was pretty clear what show was better. American Dad isn't too far behind it. The Simpsons isn't even on anyways radar anymore. Does it even air? Who cares.

I'm ready to get flamed by the old fawks who refuse to believe The Simpsons isn't funny. Come at me.

You'd be embarrassing yourself less if you came on here and said you were completely illiterate.

Although not liking the Simpsons is very nearly the same thing.

I was referring to older seasons of The Simpsons. I haven't watched the Simpsons in probably close to 10 years.

Rick and Morty and Aqua Teen Hunger Force pushed different boundaries. I prefer those shows. I even liked later seasons of Beavis & Butthead better than The Simpsons.

The clips I posted are from the early seasons, which are widely regarded as the best. It has aged like fine wine.

I don't give a shit about The Simpsons and haven't since I was a kid. Maybe the first couple of seasons or so, I was into it. But I literally haven't watched an episode in over 25 years.

I can't believe the show is still running after all this time though. That's impressive. Even if I'm not watching, somebody apparently is.

  • Since its debut on December 17, 1989, 622 episodes of The Simpsons have been broadcast. Its 29th season began on October 1, 2017. It is the longest-running American sitcom and the longest-running American animated program, and, in 2009, it surpassed Gunsmoke as the longest-running American scripted primetime television series.
  • The Simpsons Movie grossed over $527 million (and was released well past it's prime).
  • Huge Internationally.
  • It's the biggest Cartoon of all time.
  • It's made billions in merchandising (Est almost $5 Billion)
  • Had a double platinum album, multiple successful video games, and has their own ride and theme park area.
  • The Simpsons has won 32 Primetime Emmy Awards in four categories.
  • Peaked at an average of 27.8 Million viewers per episode in it's highest rated season and topped 20 million per episode 4 years, and 10 million average viewers per episode 15 seasons.
  • Has been on Primetime Network TV for 29 seasons and counting (It's didn't get cancelled or sent to the minor leagues like FG and AD)
  • The Simpsons was the first successful animated program in American prime time since Wait Till Your Father Gets Home in the 1970s

That's just some of their achievements. The Simpsons is actually a well written show with many iconic and lovable characters. It has heart, it has good stories. It doesn't require cheap gags for the ADD generation. Sure the writing quality declined over the years due to it being on longer than any other primetime tv show ever. As well as many of the writers going on to great success like Conan O'Brien, or those that left for Futurama.

Of all shows you bring up fucking Family Guy. A show that relies on the same stupid gags over and over and has been shit since season 3 or 4. South Park completely destroyed Family Guy for the unoriginal, poor storytelling, one trick pony it is. American Dad isn't worth talking about. Neither are even in the same stratosphere as The Simpsons.

Or I'll just let Mr. MacFarlane put it in his own words:

"The Simpsons created an audience for prime-time animation that had not been there for many, many years ... As far as I'm concerned, they basically re-invented the wheel. They created what is in many ways—you could classify it as—a wholly new medium." - Seth MacFarlane.

@Arkridge I think you're a solid poster but you should be flogged for this abortion of a thread. Waiting for your "The Godfather was overrated as hell" thread next.

Meh. Family guy is pretty shitty tbh.

Who else thinks of making a super likable arch-villain?

Simpsons are GOAT

all the shows mentioned got the chance because of the Simpsons.

so that right there objectively points to it being a good tv show.

I liked it as a child but it was prime Simpsons then

Now since usada and all the damage

It's faded immensely

This episode is 21 years old and still a classic and there's dozens more episodes I would consider classics with many memorable lines, Simpsons is probably the most quotable show of all time.

I can barely think of any standout Family Guy episodes off the top of my head from any series.

Seth MacFarlane would spit in your face. He plagiarized the Simpson's and just made it more offensive. Family guy is the Simpson's with more farts and jokes about kids with cancer. I have laughed many times at family guy and still watch sometimes, but it's not the better show. American dad 07' to 12 is the goat. Followed by first 5 seasons of futurama, followed by Simpson's, followed by 06-12 of family guy.

Family Guy was reasonably good during its initial run but honestly fox cancelled it at about the right time and it should have stayed down, everything since has been largelty aweful including all of his other cartoons.

It was never close to the first decade of the simpsons though, Futurama did reach a similar kind of level although ironically I think Fox cancelled it at around the right point to, the comebacks weren't aweeful like Family Guy but weren't on the same level as the first 4 seasons.

Wrong. First 5 years of comeback were great.
