..... it was fun while it lasted.....
speaking of politically incorrect entertainment, Blazing Saddles....yeah....I wonder how that would hold up today.

It doesn't matter what part of the conversation they're offended by. They find something offensive and respond by telling others that being offended by something is inappropriate. THe contradictory nature of it should always be pointed out.

the producers of Simpsons. Even Al Jean didnt really know how to respond.
sure? lol
its ok, you arent Indian. Of course you dont knowRight.
My head is still spinning from all the lives ruined by Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.

Im mixed race living in Scotland, people used to mock me with apu lines because Im brown..... I didnt for one second resent the character or wish it would go away, sometimes people are ignorant. Which is exactly what the simpsons is displaying with all its characters.... ignorant stereotypes, but thats whats funny about the charactersAgain bro.....You can be a Scottish kid in America, born and raised....Nobody will even know your scoottish, thus nobody will make fun of you based off that character.
an Indian kid on the other hand raised in America.....He will be made fun of because of APU, they will mock them by using the character APU.
If you don't see the difference, you're an idiot.
I like the character Apu, but I know kids and I know American Whites....They would totally use Apu or any other stereotype to make fun of people, so I can see why people would be pissed at Apu.....Should he be destroyed? I think not....but all these stupid fucking comparisons in these threads are so fucking wrong.
I’m kind of torn on this to be honest.
On one side, I want to censure the PC-Libs, SJWs, and SLWLs again for their uber political correctness gone amok again.
Apu was a great character, and hilarious imo. (not in a racial caricature kind of way). The several episodes I’ve seen that have circulated around him all have been great. And I think Apu was one of the first prominent Indian Characters on Prime Time US television. Like @HomerThompson mentioned, Apu wasn’t a gross caricature of Indian people. He wasn’t mocked for being Hindu, he didn’t take $hit from the other white characters, he wasn’t the punchline in racially charged jokes…I mean, back when Simpsons was in its prime (like 15 years ago), he was in the greatest episodes. (eg. who needs a Kwikee Mart) . So yea, part of me is like fu*k you libs, like @nac386
And on the other side, I emphasize a great deal with Hank Azaria. And yea, I’ve heard Indian clerks at 7/11 mocked for their accent and jokingly called “Apu” by disgruntled/drunk customers. I can only imagine the shit that Indian children got in schools. And he if feels “guilt” from that, good on him. He’s an empathetic human being.
Speaking from my personal experience, the closest comparison I can think of is Long Duck Dong from Sixteen Candles. Not only is that a shit film, but his character was racist AF. I remember getting into an argument with my Mexican GF at the time who couldn’t grasp why I didn’t find his character funny at all, and offensive. I said, “long duck dong’ is no different than Speedy Gonzales.
Ps. @panamaican , isn't your wife Indian? what are her thoughts?
I think this is a bit of a myth. Pretty much every raunchy comedy is full of politically incorrect humor and nobody cares.
I just watched Observe and Report the other day, and it's full of racism, jokes about mentally handicapped people, and a rape scene of for comedic effect.
lol this very conversation is proof."You can not understand unless you are."
Sounds like a textbook "special pleading" fallacy to me.
And somewhere Alexis de Tocqueville sighs.
Your entire first paragraph kind of illustrates the problem here. You've decided that Azaria is wrong to express an opinion on Azaria's character because you don't find other people's opinion on Azaria's character offensive.
And that since everyone who is involved with this issue disagrees with you, they are all being overly emotional and wrong. But you, who didn't create the character and I'm guessing you aren't Indian, you are right about how they should feel.
That doesn't strike you as a little insane?
That you, with next to nothing invested in the conversation, believe that you have a firmer grasp on the rights/wrongs of other people's response than the invested parties.
I'll be honest, it strikes me as insane.
You realize I haven't voiced any support or opposition to the character right? I just said it's unfair to call Hank Azaria a liar and pussy for his opinion, and that there's no reason to assume he's pandering.
I haven't even heard of this...
And you are incorrect. Even Comedy and comedians have come under heavy fire from the uber left and PC police.
Bill Maher, David Chapelle, Chris Rock.
I think I mentioned this before, but David Chapelle took some heat for his Transgender jokes in his recent stand up acts on Netflix.
Is he caving to their liberal nonsense, or is he just being honest?
My guess is that he's just being honest. He has no motivation to pretend. I definitely have no reason to assume he's lying just to cave to the small amount of criticism the show has gotten.
I think people spend too much time caring about this stuff. You guys seem just as outraged that Hank Azaria said this as the few outraged people were that Apu was stereotypical.
Who cares?
Observe and Report is very, very dark comedy starring Seth Rogan playing a mall cop with Bi-polar disorder. He frequently torments Aziz Ansari for looking like a terrorist (not playfully, he hates him), he rapes a drunk passed out girl who he gave his medication to, Ray Liotta calls him a fucking retard because of his mental illness, the list goes on.
It's very dark, but it's pretty interesting. Check it out sometime.
