The Simpsons™ Destroyed By PC Goons. #ApuToo

I don't disagree. My specific point is that people are always telling other people not to get offended or hurt by things while they continue to find other things hurtful/offensive in their personal lives.

The implication that these people are acting in a way contrary to our otherwise emotionless society is unreal.

At the most childish level...why can't these people stop being offended that other people are offended? Why don't they just ignore it to the same extent that they expect others to ignore things?

Sure, people are contradictory all the time. Although I've noticed that sometimes these people aren't offended by other people being offended, but rather by offended people trying to change something (tv show, society). They just have a hard time articulating the reason why they are upset, so the negative energy gets focused on offended people themselves.

Go up to an Indian person with that voice and see what happens. Most likely you are going to get stomped back to your trailer park.

Purposefully disrespecting someone to their face is a bit different than a satirical cartoon that jokes about all cultures, or at least did before everyone on social media immigrated to the far side of stupid.

Well I think the result speaks for itself. Apu is not malicious. He’s not insulting. Hes racial but not racist. If nobody complained, hank clearly wouldn’t have stopped since he’s been doing it for 30 years. It can be argued he needed it pointed out to him, but then we circle back to the beginning where I said jus because someone points out they’re offended by something you’ve done doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong. So I suppose it comes down to whether you actually think apu is a character causing harm. If you do, I’ll tell you your wrong and we can agree to disagree.

Standing up for yourself doesn’t make you coddled, but not knowing the difference between something malicious and something innocuous, and believing that you are entitled to dictate the innocuous actions of others because you feel offended, does. I know because this is how I was raised and how I thought up until my teenage years. Beside the fact it’s a terrible way to exist, it’s not productive and ultimately it’s just a way to exercise power over others in a weak and sneaky way.

As for your analogy, that’s why i specified. If they’re calling him fat tony because he’s italian, like these stories about Indians being called apu, i wouldn’t entertain the idea of that being offensive at all in any way. If the words were actually hurtful words, I’d make sure he doesn’t use those as an excuse to feel victimized and get violent. If the words were in some way a precursor to violence then I’d tell him to use his boxing, jits, and wrestling to defend himself if need be but never to initiate any violence unless it’s preventative.

Your entire first paragraph kind of illustrates the problem here. You've decided that Azaria is wrong to express an opinion on Azaria's character because you don't find other people's opinion on Azaria's character offensive.

And that since everyone who is involved with this issue disagrees with you, they are all being overly emotional and wrong. But you, who didn't create the character and I'm guessing you aren't Indian, you are right about how they should feel.

That doesn't strike you as a little insane?

That you, with next to nothing invested in the conversation, believe that you have a firmer grasp on the rights/wrongs of other people's response than the invested parties.

I'll be honest, it strikes me as insane.

Ps. @panamaican , isn't your wife Indian? what are her thoughts?

My wife doesn't watch the Simpsons, she doesn't care. Honestly, I haven't watched the show in years but I didn't care back when I did. But I can see how others might care.

What on earth are you talking about?

I have no idea, and your logic is bizarre.

Would being an educated Imperial Wizard of the KKK be preferable to being an ignorant child?

It doesn't matter what part of the conversation they're offended by. They find something offensive and respond by telling others that being offended by something is inappropriate. THe contradictory nature of it should always be pointed out.

The thing with Apu is that other than his accent and working at a convenience store he didn’t really embody too many negative stereotypes about Indians, like being a cheapskate that always haggles and is constantly trying to rip people off.

I could see Indian viewers being irritated or offended at the portrayal of Hinduism perhaps, but honestly I don’t think he was ever cast in a particularly bad light. He was one of the nicer characters on the show that most people liked.

There is obviously quiet a bit about the character I could imagine children being teased about but I think that's perhaps as much down to the under representation on TV generally of Indians/Pakistani's in the era.

I would say that under representation really plays into the characters more stereotypical aspects being very superficial relative to others, I mean coming from the UK were Indian sub continent immigrates had a lot more pop culture representation earlier he always stood out rather but I think that's also become more obvious in the US as the same has happen over the last 20 years.

Instead of jumping to the conclusion that Hank is just being PC, maybe he's just being honest in saying that he feels a bit of regret for the way he crafted the character.

People can disagree with him, but it gets a little bit old always hearing people assume other people's intentions are not sincere.
Apu has been on the Simpson's for over 25 years. Azaria has expressed his regret after RECENT backlash. Something about that doesn't seem honest.

lol at you picking two extremes, but yes. At least you know what you are getting with an open racist whereas here, they have no idea

It will continue to be completely fine to stereotype and crack jokes about the working class Americans though. You'll still have Homer and his family.
Nobody has ever gone to American School, and have people make fun of them because of how "Homer" they are since they are a working class American.

Here's the thing, you dumbasses fail to realize.....Lots of assholes in school and in public, use the APU character to make fun of Indian people...That's the fucking truth, specially kids in elementary school thru high school.

its all idiotic, the simpsons is based on stereotypes..... Im Scottish and almost our entire nation love Groundskeeper Willie, if they remove him we will fucking riot lol

or write them a strongly worded tweet......... one of the 2

Again bro.....You can be a Scottish kid in America, born and raised....Nobody will even know your scoottish, thus nobody will make fun of you based off that character.

an Indian kid on the other hand raised in America.....He will be made fun of because of APU, they will mock them by using the character APU.

If you don't see the difference, you're an idiot.

I like the character Apu, but I know kids and I know American Whites....They would totally use Apu or any other stereotype to make fun of people, so I can see why people would be pissed at Apu.....Should he be destroyed? I think not....but all these stupid fucking comparisons in these threads are so fucking wrong.

Who is "they?"

All the legions of skinheads clogging our street corners thanks to the blind hate of Apu?

RIP "The Simpson's"....

..... it was fun while it lasted.....

To be fair the hardcore fans wrote the eulogy around the year 2000.

Round about the time the show transitioned from brilliant satire to zany sitcom.
