There is no simple solution. However, one of many strategies to stem the number of opioid deaths is the plant mitragyna speciosa (kratom). Kratom has successfully weened thousands off of opiates. It is absolutely shameful that more rehab centers do not promote it's use. I guess it's bad for the rehab business to actually get people to stop using opioids.

Holy shit! Yes, there is an epidemic going on. No, I don’t know how to solve it. I respond to several overdoses every month. You may say that a few od’s a month is not that many, but I am a lieutenant, and i do not respond to that many call. We have on average, one od every day. Sometimes, we have multiple calls of that nature every day. Sometimes, we have multiple overdoses during a shift.

Yes, we have a serious crisis going on.

I haven't read the whole thread yet but, in WA if you get arrested for something that would normally get you booked, if you tell them you're on heroin they will let you go that night because jails can't and won't deal with someone going through withdrawals. Just thought I would throw that out there.
 
It's a huge problem here in Ohio. But I think the easiest solution would be to just legalize it to get the dealers off the streets and let the junkies just shoot themselves up dead. Far too much of our tax dollars are going to this issue instead of towards the schools, public services (which are awfully ran here anyways), infrastructure and business. But our entire government local and federal is a mess so I don't for-see this or any other issue improving in the near future.

Lost 16 people I went to HS with. Absolutely a problem here. Idk how you guys can even n fathom a way to deal with it at this point.

I know around that many who got off of heroin, morphine, oxy, suboxone, alcohol & even something as seemingly harmless as vicodin with the kratom plant. In regards to the US opiate epidemic. I find it very curious that the heroin epidemic happened after the US took over parts of Afghanistan & allowed the production of the Papaver Somniferum plant (Poppy). Not only do they allow it's production. They guard it! Much too long to write a detailed account but I believe this is a CIA operation. Similar operations have historically been carried out in other Countries. China being one off the top of my head. I also find it very disturbing that the new head of the FDA Scott Gottlieb wants to ban a key solution to the addiction problem in America. Yes that's right. This evil moron wants to try and ban the kratom plant. It's not a coincidence that Scott Gottlieb is a Big Pharma consultant. Also very strange that the FDA recently approved a highly addictive opiate called Zohydro as well as Hysingla. Anyone who spends a little time investigating will quickly come to understand that an agenda of phuckery is afoot. Federal agencies like the FDA are not a watchdog for the general public. They are a lapdog for Big Pharma. If the American public does not wake the phuck up we will continue to see more unnecessary opiate deaths. Not only will it never end. It will grow exponentially!
 
What's most interesting to me is how people are responding to this epidemic vs how they responded to the crack epidemic. It seems now that because this epidemic is overwhelmingly affecting white communities there is a more humane approach to this problem instead of just doubling down on the war on drugs and sending all these people to jail. I know I am not the only one who can see this.

How old are you? 16 is a lot. I'm 30, and while I dont think any of the people I've went to HS with dying, so many have become messed up. So many of the HS athletes I knew are messed up. One guy I knew, who was 2 yrs ahead of me was the star football player. He's like 32 now, living in a home for old people. It's crazy how easy heroine and opioids derail people.

I believe there is an element of truth in what you are saying. Most middle class/upper middle class/rich believe that there is no solution for drug use amongst the uneducated poor. Crack use in poor communities whether black, white, hispanic or Native American can not be solved. This is also the attitude toward poverty as well. Even if you gave a family living in section 8 housing $100,000. They would be in the same situation a year later. in fact they would probably be even worse off.

Western PA. Most of the kids that eventually passed away started messing with OCs back in the early 2000s and I'm assuming it snowballed from there (don't really run in those circles anymore so I'm not sure but I know most of them were dabbling in opiates back then so it's a logical assumption).
