The Opiod Epidemic

That urologist was an asshole for forcing you to pass stones without an opioid; not just because he knew you would need them, but because he knew the ER would prescribe them. He just passed the buck and liability to the ER doc.

The drugs aren't outlawed, so something like a kidney stone evidenced by a CT shouldn't prevent a doctor from prescribing pain meds.
And not every prescriber is an unethical p.o.s. but they're out there. The good news is that its getting more and more difficult for them to justify their practice. Eventually anybody needing pain meds will be referred to a pain management clinic who will try and alleviate pain for some the best they can, treat some patients like its a methadone clinic, and refer others to substance abuse specialists.

It's becoming more and more common where people that need serious pain relief are left suffering because doctors are afraid to prescribe opioids. They can face charges if the patient is an idiot and dies of an overdose. Yet all I hear on the news and what keeps getting parroted over and over again on sherdog is that doctors are handing them out like candy. It reminds me a lot of the propaganda for the war on drugs.

That's insane. Mine was under 4mm and it was morphine at the hospital into 2 days of Vicodin. Needed it too. Was there some other reason they held back on you? That's kinda sadistic.
I had a 8mm one, which I guess is the threshold for surgery - they kept me overnight on an IV and pumping me with fluids - didn't pass it. Next morning I had surgery to remove it - the non-incision variety.

The amount of people left without pain medication is insignificant to the epidemic that was caused by giving powerful opioids to anybody who asked. There are still non-opioid options. A study came out of Albany, NY that showed that high dose ibuprofen is just as good for pain as opioids where opioids would be typically prescribed. There are still situations that IBU is insufficient and opioids are warranted.

The days of handing them out like skittles is coming to an end. There are still a few prescribers that are doing it - probably because they're in too deep or are still incredibly naive and negligent. Most are ramping it down.

Yes there is one.

I've seen it...and have had people close to me fall victim to it.

Yes, some may dismiss this as anecdotal evidence, but I've seen it up close and personal.

and it fu*king angers me to no end that there are still so many people who on one hand, talk about the "evils" of marijuana, but are perfectly cool with the opiates pumped out in mass by pharmaceutical companies.

Conservatives, especially the backward Republican folks need to enter the 21st century and stop with this nonsense about "gate way drug"
I have too. My brother and his girlfriend threw away over a decade of their lives to that shit. He's just getting to be a normal person again after years of being a fuck off.

Did they give you the dick laser? 8mm sounds really scary. Can't imagine what that felt like ripping through your kidney tissue.

The entered through the ol pee hole, send up with some sort of instrument and grabbed it and pulled it out. Thankfully I was knocked out, but I did have a stent in the ol'wang up to where the kidney stone was lodged as the passage could collapse after the procedure for two weeks afterwards. Walked around with thread hanging out of mah dick - go to the urologist weeks later and drop trou and he just yanks on the thread and pulls the stent out - I saw a bright light at that moment.

Oh god, that made my toes hurt reading that one. Mine have all come out in pieces, was lucky, not much pain. They better have given you some drugs.

Psychopath in Chief Donald Trump says the opoid epidemic costs us half a trillion dollars every year. That's about the same that the US government budgets for defense across the entire world, so you have to be dumber than a sack of shit to actually believe these figures. You should be highly skeptical when a salesman like Trump is making insane claims to undoubtedly lobby for money. Now if you were to tell me that this is a calculation of the money wasted by the government trying to police drugs both domestically and internationally, I could believe that.

Maybe you'll think a little differently if you are the one left suffering. Opioids are the best thing out there for severe pain.

Tell you what. Try passing a large kidney stone on ibuprofen. Can you link the study?

I don't take NSAIDS because they exacerbate another condition I have. I basically don't take any painkillers at all unless I'm in extreme pain.

????

Did you miss the post I made stating that your urologist was an asshole for withholding opioids in your condition?
Your anecdote doesn't compare to the well documented epidemic that is killed over 30,000 people in 2015.
There is a reason the origins of this epidemic don't coincide with the invention of opioids. Prior to 1996, the guidelines for pain management didn't include giving opioids for everything that ails you.

Here is a great read on that last part: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/10/30/the-family-that-built-an-empire-of-pain

Here is an article discussing the study: http://www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-pain-opioids-ibuprofen-20171107-story.html
Here is an abstract for the study, I don't have access to the full study from home: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2661581

It's truly disgusting and tragic....

I have a few horror stories to tell you in pm.

You never really don't know what addiction does to a person until you see it first hand.

i basically grew up around heroin from the age of 13. lost one of my best friends to it and about 6 or 7 guys i went to school with. Yet it doesnt bother me at all, there are many, many, dangerous things to do in this world. It is up to you to choose your path, not the government.

opioid abuse is most common in places where cannabis is probibited. somewhat ironically, the war on drugs is a leading cause of the opioid elidemic. let people ingest whatever they want and everything will balance itself out.

Yeah people fell on those needles running away from cops

what needles? i thought we were talkin about pills like oxycontin. regardless, i think you missed my point.

Addicts gonna addict
Don’t blame the drug war
Come work in an er for a few months and get back to me. I just don’t want to pay to jail them. So make it legal for that reason

yah opioid addicts are just born that way . sure. their drug use has nothing to do with social factors.
