We get a good one today so I’m going to break it down a little.
So Skyy with 2 y’s says the movie is underwhelming and has no stakes. She then talks a bit about “the plot”. The big problem here is that she completely ignores the metaphor because she just doesn’t get the movie.
Then she talks about how cgi is bad and the fighting was sloppy (lol the action scenes in Resurrections are amazing). Again she says that there are no stakes but still completely ignores the metaphor because she doesn’t understand the movie.
Then she talks about how she was scrolling through her phone while watching but was still able to follow along.
Next up is quite a bit more about the fashion in the movie then I typically hear people talk about so that was interesting. She has a few good ideas how the style of the characters could be improved. “I would have loved a monocle” she enthusiastically says. Another idea is steam punk since “it’s like revisiting the past which is what this movie is doing alot”. Sorry wrong again. In fact the movie goes out of its way to say that it is something new and the thing that many viewers find most unsettling is how it defies their expectations.
Ok I think this part was just an error on her part but she says we are in a Pangea and they should have used masks as part of the costumes. I think she means pandemic but she says it twice. Also the train scene features a bunch of Asians wearing masks which obviously refers to the pandemic.
Then she uses talking about the color of Morpheus’ coat to transition into complaints about the casting. My overall opinion of people who complain about Fishburne or Weaving not being in the movie is they completely miss the point that the film is making about expectations of a sequel. No one complains that Power of the Dog isn’t good because Lawrence Fishburne isn’t in it. That would be ridiculous. But why should we expect that from this movie? Do we really just want to be told the same story with some new twist? Does the movie have to be a certain way just because it’s what we think it’s supposed to be? We can extrapolate that the director is making an even greater statement about how we take certain societal norms for granted without ever considering their merit or necessity. We mostly just go with the flow and assume that the status quo is the best way.
This leads to some discussion of the film footage and flashbacks. I don’t think she caught very much of the metaphor which makes up the biggest part of the movie which is that Matrix Resurrections is about Matrix Resurrections. I know saying if that’s a good idea or not is subjective but I think it’s brilliant and she didn’t care for it so different opinions/whatever. The idea of a movie about itself in which people are unknowingly living in an artificial reality that is an allegory for the way modern humans are not living in the real world but in the media is pretty interesting to me but again it’s subjective.
Lastly we get some of the things she liked such as NPH “you don’t get kudos for casting a good actor”. And she would have preferred a Harry Potter style reunion special. Hmm sounds like she might enjoy some of the bonus footage on the blue ray which has some good live commentary.
Overall I enjoyed watching this YouTube review. I’ll rate it a 2/10.
