Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Lands Lead Role in MATRIX 4, Possibly Playing Morpheus

Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has landed one of the lead roles in the latest installment in the Matrix franchise.

Sources tell Variety that director Lana Wachowski met with actors for the secret role over the last week and in recent days, Abdul-Mateen emerged as the frontrunner to join Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who will be reprising their roles in the film.

Warner Bros. announced in August that a fourth Matrix movie is officially in the works, with Reeves and Moss returning and Wachowski on board to write and direct. Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film.

In addition to Wachowski, the script was also written by Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. Wachowski is also producing with Grant Hill. The film is expected to begin production at the beginning of 2020.

Plot details are currently unknown and while it was rumored a young Morpheus could appear in the movie, sources close to the film would not confirm Abdul-Mateen’s specific role. THR's sources speculate that Abdul-Mateen II will pay a young Morpheus, a key leader in humanity's resistance against the machines.

In addition to his breakout role as Manta in Warner Bros.’ Aquaman, Abdul-Mateen portrayed Lupita Nyong’o’s character’s father in Jordan Peele’s hit Us and had a starring role in an episode of Black Mirror. He will appear as Cal Abar in HBO’s Watchmen TV series, which also stars Regina King and Don Johnson.

Abdul-Mateen was most recently cast to play Black Panther co-founder Bobby Seale in Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 and landed the titular role in the Peele-produced Candyman, set for release in 2020. He will topline the Netflix drama All Day and a Night alongside Jeffrey Wright.

I'm not sure I wanna watch a new matrix movie where the directors literally chopped their dicks off tbh

The Wachinski's rebooted their genders, so why not their movies too? Morpheous should be played by Ru Paul. Ellen Degeneres would make a great Neo.

so a young Morpheus equals the early rebellion wars? The emergence of the first agents? The escaping of the first humans from the energy pods? And early exploration of the Architect and oracle???

I love the original movie but it's tough to get pumped for this.

Probably would have been better if they just cast Carrie Ann Moss in John Wick 4 as an ally for Keanu/Laurence against the Adjudicator and co.

lol I see the first page with posts in mid-2017 back when many of us, though still very negative about this Matrix news.....were not nearly as cynical about the state of entertainment.

We were really high on GoT s6 and anticipating s7. Logan had come out months ago and we loved it. We were so stoked for Balderunner 2049, Thor Ragnorak, TLJ, Black Panther, Infinity War part 1 and 2.

Then 2018 happened.....welp.

If they are going to do this, they need to do it with new characters, and do it with the same type of slow-build intrigue that they did the first Matrix movie with.

The Matrix is one of my favorite movies... so I'll have center seats in a modern Dolby theater on opening day.

Due to the actor's aging... I'm thinking it would have to be forward on the timeline right? but Trinity is dead... & supposedly Neo is too, though he realistically could still be alive too though.

Okay, so here's my theory.

Remember when Neo held off the squids with the power of his will at the end of Ep. 3? That tells me that they were never even out of the Matrix during the entire Trilogy. So Neo wakes up (suposedly) "for real" & finds Trinity in the pods. Perhaps he jacks in & finds Trinity in the Matrix... for a nice roll reversal after she was supposedly the one who found him in the first movie. Could be fun!!!

Like the Architect said, they've been dealing with these "anomaly" types over & over, & they created & destroyed Zion on purpose over & over. We all assumed it was real world though. However, with a little bit of clever programming, they could easily have created an alternate program where the rebel types think they're being removed from the pods, but meanwhile they're still actually tucked nice & neat into their pods just like they always have.

& with their rebellious spirit & will to survive, I can imagine they would be that much better of a "battery" for the machines.

So now in Ep. 4... we'll see Neo actually escape irl. The big question obviously then will be "is it even real life."

Of course this all goes into the metaphysical reality of our own 3D world that was the premise of the whole original movie & trilogy. THE MATRIX IS REAL. The only way we can recognize 3D reality it is through our senses... & that all boils down to electrical impulses in the brain... so how real is it? Even physicists have calculations for a holographical universe. Think about that for a minute. Our whole reality is nothing but a hologram that we're all connected to atm.

So the beauty of the Matrix movies is bringing up this question that perhaps there's more to this life than we realize. This is the symbology that the Matrix movie was built on. & so the possible Ep. 4 scenario I wrote above, would play right into that... & give people another really close look at what exactly is "real." Everyone thought the original Trilogy was real world, but if it wasn't then that's just another level of illusion. "Layers & Layers" as Morpheus said.

"If real is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain." - Morpheus Kenny Florian

Interesting theory.

Not sure how they will handle it and I do feel they have dropped the ball with the other installments.. first Matrix was incredible, masterpiece really while the other very from so so to good-ish at times.

It could be that they have waited too much or that this is just a pure money grab or best case scenario for us is that this was a well constructed story and was planned many years before pushing it into reality.

On the recent news I did like the intensity of the actor from Aquaman (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II .. that's quite the name) he had something there.
