THE LION KING (First Reactions)

Why not just get the Broadway cast to do the voices (other than James Earl Jones of course)? Why do they need big stars for voice roles?

Jon Favreau's Lion King may have found its Hakuna Matata. Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner are in talks to voice Pumbaa and Timon, respectively.

Donald Glover is set to star as Simba, while James Earl Jones will reprise his role from the 1994 animation as Mufasa.

Jeff Nathanson (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) wrote the script for the live-action adaptation, which is being produced by Favreau and Jeffrey Silver.

In the original animation, Nathan Lane voiced the loud-mouth meerkat and Ernie Sabella tackled the kindly warthog.

Rogen, who has voiced animated characters in films including Kung Fu Panda, Monsters vs. Aliens and last year's Sausage Party, which he also co-wrote and produced, will next be seen in James Franco's The Disaster Artist. He is also set to star opposite Charlize Theron in the political comedy Flarsky.

These castings come on the heels of more big news for the Lion King production. Today, Disney gave the project a release date of July 19, 2019, along with several other upcoming productions including Indiana Jones, Frozen 2 and Star Wars: Episode IX.

Jeff Nathanson (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) wrote the script for the live-action adaptation, which is being produced by Favreau and Jeffrey Silver. Lion King is set for a July 19, 2019, release date.

Rowan Atkinson voiced the uptight hornbill in the original 1996 animated pic, who serves as a feathered political advisor to Simba and Mustafa.

Goddamn the voice cast just nosedived. They start off strong with James Earl Jones and Donald Glover, then they get obnoxious Billy Eichner and I'm guessing a stoned Pumba in Seth Rogan (to be fair the last movie I saw of his was Sausage Party which was hot garbage). What's next James Franco for Scar? Fuck man they should have just had more of the original voice actors return. Jeremy Irons coming back should be a no brainer.

Beyonce, who was previously reported to be eyed for the film, has been confirmed as Nala, Simba's (Donald Glover) childhood friend and later love interest. Jon Favreau is directing the film as his followup to his successful Jungle Book remake.

“It is a director's dream to assemble a talented team like this to bring this classic story to life,” said Favreau in a statement.

Here's the full list, with some new names as well as others that have been reported over the last few months:

James Earl Jones reprises his role from the 1994 original as Simba’s father Mufasa, while Chiwetel Ejiofor is stepping into the villain role as Simba's uncle Scar. Alfre Woodard is voicing Simba's mother Sarabi, with child actor JD McCrary playing the young version of Simba (stepping into the shoes of Jonathan Taylor Thomas from the original film). Shahadi Wright Joseph is voicing the young Nala. Other actors playing the good guys include John Kani as the baboon Rafiki and John Oliver voicing Mufasa’s confidant, the hornbill Zazu.

Simba will along the way meet two new pals, warthog Pumbaa (Seth Rogen) and the all meerkat Timon (Billy Eichner). The three menacing hyenas will be voiced by Black Panther actress Florence Kasumba , Eric Andre and Keegan-Michael Key.

Favreau showed off the jaw-dropping first footage for the film over the summer at D23. The footage included photo-real African landscapes and animals, ending the iconic moment in which Rafiki introduces an adorable young Simba on Pride Rock as "Circle of Life" plays.

The original Lion King grossed more than $968 million worldwide and featured memorable songs from Elton John and Tim Rice. The new Lion King opens July 19, 2019.

Prefer to see mention at the top of the post you call us in on... about whether it's animated or not... on thingz like this that could possibly be animated or maybe some other form of art like a play or Lion king on ice... or whatever. (Edit: I see the OP says "live action"... it's just a lot of confusion to call us in & have to figure it all out.)

Much love for what Brother Dragon bringz to the table... keeping us "in the know" on hollywood... but I'm just requesting that if there's a question in there... lets mention that at the top of a post... so we know what we're working with. I had to read the target post twice... & still thought it was animated, until I eventually scrolled up to read the OP. This isn't the first time. It's real easy to add the word "animated" to the post is all I'm saying.

I hope everyone involved in this project really really likes the money. Because otherwise, it's gotta feel really funny to know that your working on what's bound to be the third best iteration of a story that's already been told twice inside of the last 25 years. No way this supplants either the Animated original, or the Broadway show.
