That's just one way of doing it. I've seen it taught the other way as well. Really he stressed the rotation and straight elbow more than anything though. Practically everyone I've encountered who boxes though does it with the thumb up (based on my experience).

I was always taught to throw the hook with the palm towards my face. I try the palm down method periodically, but can't seem to generate as much power.

You have to keep the palm up...cant generate as much power when the palm is parallel to the crack (or European style)

Ok, maybe I'm confused here. But, just for the record at 2:44 of the video, Freddie Roach did say "palm facing the floor", right? If you read my original post, I did not say that was the only way that it could be done or that was the way it absolutely had to be done, what I said was:

When I was hopping from gym to gym here in the US and over in Thailand, I'd be throwing my hooks with say the palm down, and a trainer would tell me, "No! Palm facing you!" So I'd correct it and then I'd move on to the next gym where a trainer will tell me, "No! Palm facing down!" Repeat ad nauseum. Eventually, somehow, palm in stuck.

Either way, as long as the body mechanics are correct, you can knock guys out palm down or palm in, so this seems pretty insignificant to me.

I didn't say anyone is wrong.

I understand what you are saying, and will be the first to admit that there are very few absolutes in life, and that the left hook is certainly not an absolute. Some people will also say that the hook can only be throw with the lead hand (there was just a recent thread about it), yet Pacquiao knocked out Hatten with a powerside hook. Once someone has received sufficient training, my only personal recommendation to them would be "utilize what works, and discard what does not."

Big white plastic ringside buckets seem to work well, also. :icon_lol: I am still laughing about that video clip.

the first style is for short distance (european style)

the second is for long distance

ive always been a sitting down kinda dude, but i remember we used to laugh at my friend in college because he used the standup technique. he was a big Russian dude and at first, we were wondering why the top his head would be sticking up where you could see it behind the bathroom stall door. when he explained it to us, we all thought it was hella funny.

however, i have to say...i tried the standup method experimentally earlier this year at work...just for the final few wipes (when all of the dirty work has already been done). i gotta say that its not as awkward as i originally thought and i will go to that method from time to time to finish things off.

See???

I tried to wipe my ass standing up and clenched the toilet paper in my ass. Not a good day. Next time your'e between guys, bring up the subject, chances are everyone will give you the "well obviously I do it _______" and be shocked at any other answer.

lol didn't expect to read this stuff in this thread. But I guess the forum is called "standup technique" after all..

Can you prove this?

i was referring to wiping my ass...ive never really tried to wipe with my hand parallel to my ass crack...seems more effective to wipe with 4 fingers instead of just using the side of 1, but thats just my opinion.

as far as the hooks go, ive never taken boxing lessons but my Muay Thai Kru corrected me when i was throwing hooks with the thumb facing the ceiling, even though its more comfortable for me than the thumb facing my face.

Ok, so I took some savate a couple years back, and my instructor had some european training,s o when it cam to the hook he showed us to turn you wrist so that your thumb is pointing to the ceiling, wich is apparently european style. Now I'm doing boxing and the instructor is telling me to have the thumb pointing at my face, wich is the more popular way of doing it. What are your opinions on this? I don't see much difference although I prefer the european style because the punch will use all the knuckles.

Depend,i feel that with the "normal" i can put more weight on my punch, but "european" seem work better in many situation (at least for me)
I never think about that,is not complicated as i'm going to write it is just about when it come out more istinctive to me

"Normal" if
-i'm nearly sure to hit
-at ideal range
-during or right after a dodge
-i need give it a slight up to down trajectory

"European" if
-i'm throwing a lead hook (not ever, but i find it more natural)
-i'm a lil bit far
-i'm really close
-i'm punching the ribs
-in clinch
-i need give it a slight down to up trajectory
-i'm using MMA gloves (i'm scared to break my little finger)

My old roomate had the weirdest way to wipe his ass. He took a single square of toilet paper, rolled it aorund his index and pretty much scraped the inside of his ass. He was pretty proud to be able to do it with one damm square. I didn't know what to say.

My other friend goes from bck to front, witrh his hands between his legs. That one is just straight up weird.

Your'e a dick. I wish you'd live close by so I could set you up on a date with my coach.

Fair enough.

Vertical fist (palm towards face) because this way your knuckles are aligned as you land the punch. A horizontal punch risks knuckle separation. But this is only if you go bare-knuckle.

I prefer with thumb facing me. This feels looser, my hoods flow better and I have a better time controlling the range. When my thumb is facing up it tightens up my forearm which I feel lessens my explosiveness.

WTF? People wipe their asses standing up? How would you even do that? My asscheeks would clench on the stuff I wanted to wipe.
