The Hook Debate: Palm in or Palm down? (17 threads mashed together, have fun)

Thumb up for a tight close range hook

Thumbs towards your face if theres a bit more range needed

I remember seeing in a video that 180degree hooks are better because they have more power in them. Is that true?

Sorry for the shitty pics, only one's i could find.

180degrees - Your fist pointing horizontally

90degrees - Your fist pointing vertically

I would say use whats best for that situation. Rampage knocked out wandy with the 90* hook because that's what he had room for. If you have the speed and space to pull it off (and if your opponent doesn't see it coming) put as much rotation and power into it as you can.

There are other variables like the bend of the forearm at the elbow for the hook I personally prefer vertical fist and a tight hook at the elbow because the force runs down the whole forearm as compared to running out about half way down the forearm though the wider hook has more reach so it may also depend on the situation.....

Whether your fist is vertical or horizontal makes no difference in power. It just depends on the situation, for example a vertical fist maybe better for going behind someone's arm for a body shot where as a horizontal may be better for slipping in through someone's attempt at CMD.

Doesn't matter at all as long as you are punching with the 2 knuckles front out.

With a short hook, your arm makes a "tight c" in that if your body was squared up your arm would travel from a position lateral to your center and hook around to hit a target in front of you...thereby completing a 90* range of motion. A longer hook doesn't make as prominant of a range of motion, looking more like an overhand from the side.

The only way you'd be able to pull 180* is by facing one direction, starting the hook say with a left lead and turning clockwise ending the punch facing in the exact opposite direction.

A hook will have good power so long as your power comes from the ground and the rotation of your BODY and not just the arm.

Is this the old horizontal vs vertical fist question again...
It's been done to death.

Horizontal for long, vertical for close.

Inst the opposite?

I see two people say that, but that's what I have been taught. The way we are taught long hooks is that palm in long hook, usually just used as a set up for a leg kick etc. The logic I see for that is that if you do palm down for long range hooks you are more likely to connect with the last two knuckles.

Yeap, spot on.

I throw all my hooks with knuckles vertical. All the boxing trainers I've come across have taught to throw hooks this way. With knuckles horizontal...I wouldn't want to connect with the last 2 knuckles and bust my hand or wrist.

I don't like throwing my hooks 180 degrees it feels awkward and doesn't feel like I get as much power as throwing it 90. I feel that the turning action of the wrist takes a very marginal amount of speed away, but it could make a difference between landing or not landing.
