News The Global Fight League will launch in April 2025

It's a business thing rather than a sports entertainment thing
They are building a league with franchises so they can end up selling the franchises as the price of NBA, MLB, etc. franchises are going too high. It leaves a lot of potential buyers (VC funds, ex-minor league owners who cashed out, investor consortiums, etc.) that cannot buy even a MLS franchise but are interested by the sports franchise investments. MMA being a hot sport, you can sell this investment to your own investors if sports is one of your investment theme
Same as PFL wanting to make money by telling investors they have PFL Tournament, PFL MENA, PFL Europe, Road series to Dubai, etc., the GFL wants to make money by creating franchises and selling them to investors

Still, MMA remains a small world on the outside. The UFC, PFL/Bellator in the US, One in south east asia, ACA in russia, you just can't simply try to defy them and compete with them in a single year.

Good luck to them, because they are going to need it.

mma fights by teams?

no 1vs1? no single figths?

Tyron Woodley, Luke Rockhold, Frank Mir lmao, real smart business move to pay the big bucks for those old guys. <lmao>

Might as well call themselves the "Washed Fighters League".
Geriatric Fight League

It's pretty crazy that there is still appetite for these Fighters to fight. I think it comes down to the fact that despite there being so many more mma athletes there are less Fighters

They've signed over 200 fighters and it looks like they're going to continue to sign more. However, not all of them are going to compete. They're just getting signed for eligibility to enter the draft. If they're drafted, then they'll compete in GFL. If they don't get drafted, then I guess they're free to continue competing elsewhere.

They have invested more in the past than in present or the future. More likely washed fighters league in despair for a easy paycheck with no hunger to be great. All these fighters for the most will be gone in the next five years, meanwhiles if they were to invest on the youth and promising prospects, their Investments would last more than fifteen years.

Drafting is just a way to choose to be picky, they should be picky about signing the young prospects of the new generations, instead they limits themselves to being picky about the oldwashed fighters. There is no gems to be picked in a bag of old rocks.

We will see. But I don't think they are going to go far with their models. Expect the UFC, only ACA is 100% good to go for the next ten years. PFL and One will continue their cold war against the UFC, I doubt GFL would found a place in it.

But any alternative to the evil UFC greedy monopoly deserve support.

I'm excited about it, looks cool.

Also the 50% revenue split is great for the fighters.

I have no problem with watching 50 year old fighters. Heck, I'd watch Wanderlei at 60.

More names than some of the UFC cards.

Not sure the point of this league, to compete with the UFC?
Probably just survive 5 years and be a professional organization.

If they can do that, with the 50% revenue split, it becomes a viable option for UFC fighters who don't want to let Dana give it to them in the ass.

I can name three fighters per weightclass who are free agents and show sign of being a potential next Shamil Musaev or Tang Kai, yet none of them is being signed by GFL.

The only thing it is right now, is the washed fighter league.

They signed plenty of young fighters, but they’re not the higher ranked prospects and GFL hasn’t really promoted them that much as they don’t have big followings.

I know they’ve signed other fighters as the fighters themselves have talked about it on their social media accounts themselves as the organization has not said anything about their signings.

What’s odd is that it doesn’t really matter though as they just signed everyone for the draft. If they don’t get selected in the draft, then they’re free to compete in other organizations.

Partially true, but not with the HWGP.

The UFC bought them after the GP was set.

For example Fedor vs Bigfoot was in February of 2011 and the UFC bought them in May 2011.

But UFC did NOT pull Overeem, that’s not true. Overeem fought June 11 against Werdum and then they wanted him to fight Bigfoot (who beat Fedor in round 1 February 11th).

Overeem felt that fighting again in September was simply too quick of a turnaround and asked for more time, they refused. DC wasn’t that keen on being the replacement on 5 weeks notice (he didn’t even want to be in the GP).

Bigfoot was getting 7 months rest and he was getting 3 months after a tough fight with Werdum. After Overeem declined the date and they replaced him with DC (weeks later the UFC singed him).

UFC pulling Overeem was rage filled fan propaganda.

Overeem stated this himself:

The was all Coker’s work managing the brackets poorly trying to milk out 1 round per event. The UFC did pluck talents but Overeem or any of the HW GP guys weren’t removed by them, it was just poorly operated / dragged out by Coker much like his Bellator tournaments. Reem was replaced and later moved over to the UFC roster. IMO the first round fights were way too stretched out by him (he always does this) then other rounds issues arose.

I just can’t stress how stupid it is to have 2 fights on February 12, 2 fights on June 18 and then expect guys with 7 months rest to fight guys with less than 3 months rest. Then have the finals 9 months later. That’s just typical Coker tournaments they always end up painful to follow and disjointed. I like Scott, but fuck he’s the worst with tournaments.

Zuffa/UFC did purchase Strikeforce after the HWGP started, but this was in March 2011.

I remember there were reported issues between Alistair Overeem's management team, Golden Glory, and the UFC. The story went that Golden Glory wanted to be paid Overeem's salary directly, while UFC's policy was to pay fighters directly. As a result, UFC released Overeem from his Strikeforce contract, and that was the reason he exited the tournament.
Anyway, the UFC people were angry with Golden Glory, not at Overeem.
Later on, Overeem ended his relationship with Golden Glory, and later signed a UFC contract with Lorenzo Fertitta.
I might have some things wrong, so I would appreciate any clarifications.

This is the part that seems to not stick with most fans.

I'm thinking alot of the washed up named guys won't even get drafted. But with out them listed right now is anyone even paying attention, probably not.

It's not that easy if the fighters don't want to go there to be fair to them.

It’s why Marloes Coenen left, as well

Wish them all the best. Real competition to the UFC would be fantastic, but it will be difficult to build a brand name like the UFC. Casuals only care about the UFC brand, they don't know shit about the fighters for the most part. That's why UFC doesn't really want to promote anyone like they could, the UFC brand over the fighter's brand.
