Goals & Gains The Dark Knight(Templar)Returns.

BJJ.

Warmed up by practicing Technical Stand Up. This would be important later in the class.

Partner stands up in Guard. Open, then Sweep him onto his side. Finish with North/South or Side Control.

Partner stands up. Open, then Technical Stand Up, raise and Sweep partner's leg. I haven't done TD's for quite some time, so I misjudged the Breakfall and ended up whiplashing my neck.

God, I love BJJ. :)

The last technique was a variation on TSU: instead of standing and sweeping, hook one leg around the opponent's and drive through while still on the ground.

My partner didn't want to Roll, so we just practiced the techniques until the end of the class. I always let my partner decide if we Roll or not. Although I enjoy Rolling, at my level I get just as much, if not more, benefit from Drilling.

Glad you’re enjoying your BJJ journey. It’s very addicting.

Thank you.

Yeah, it is. Partly because you get instant feedback on your progress every time you Roll. There's no place to hide on the Mats. You win, lose or draw. So you know exactly how far you've progressed. And of course, that makes you want to do better next time.

End of Week 9.

Bugger. :(

I must have picked up an injury at BJJ. I don't recall how, but ever since Wednesday I've felt pain in my left abdominal muscles whenever I bend or stretch my torso in a certain way. Ironically, Deadlifts, which is the heaviest lift I perform, doesn't bother it at all. But laying down on a bench or doing pulldowns hurts.

The only upside is that I'm on holiday, so I can rest it as much as possible.

Is it a rib injury?

BJJ.

Still feeling pain in my upper left side, though not quite as bad. So I was careful to protect myself as much as possible.

Tripod Sweep. A variation of TP where you spin around and take the opponent down from the back, across your knee, shin. Another variation where you spin around and take the opponent down by hooking his legs, so he ends up sitting on the ground, his back to you, between your legs. Finish with Choke.

Didn't Roll today, as I don't want to make the injury any worse. Rick asked me to practice Flower Sweep with another rookie White Belt.

Good plan to take it easy until you heal up. We practice a lot of tripod sweeps too.

I'm desperate to get back to Rolling, but I have to be sensible. I only started back training on the 20th of January this year, after more than two years off. The last thing I want to do is rush things, make the injury worse and end up having to take even more time off the Mats.

Yeah, Tripod Sweeps are great. Yesterday showed just how strategic BJJ can get. We started with Tripod Sweeps, then Professor Rick showed how to counter the first version, and then how to use a different Sweep when the opponent counters.

It really is like Chess: you have to think several moves ahead.

BJJ.

Variations on the Tripod and Scissor Sweeps took up most of the class. From the most basic to the advanced versions. As Professor Rick pointed out, even if you don't use them yourself, at least you will be able to recognise them if an opponent tries to use them against use.

I was disappointed I found the more advanced Sweeps difficult to execute. Then I remembered that I struggled with even the most basic version a month or so ago. :)
