The film is WAY too long and very poorly lit.

They really missed the mark when attempting the film nior look, film nior doesn't mean just make everything dark and hard to see.. actually the opposite, you carefully light the subjects that matter so they are easier to see and read.

If you want to see a well done film-nior comic book movie watch the first Sin City, not this.

90% of the movie your eyes are straining to make out the subject matter.

Proper film nior lighting:

Haven't watched this, so no comment on it yet, but yes - you're correct about nilm foir. So much of it is about clear silhouettes and establishing depth through properly lit foreground/midground/background elements.

A lot of these HD digital cinematographers these days get bamboozled by the details, they miss the big picture. Sort of like how CGI artists will rave about particles, physics and texture detail when the overall thing is a goofy mess. Those Transformers movies were an example of that (though most of it was direction, not the CGI artists' fault) - a whole bunch of technically well executed CGI disciplines that amount to a pile of indistinguishable metal scraps clashing into each other.

And the darkness thing is a big problem. Game of Thrones suffered from that greatly. They all watch their footage back on 4k screens thinking that crispness will translate. It might, if the film is slow with long cuts, but in an action movie? You get that muddy look.

Possibly my favorite Batman yet, I love how they're leaning more and more realistic. Agree with the lighting issue and overall length, but for me it wasn't a big deal. I was pleasantly surprised by Pattinson's performance, also glad the overly rough voice thing that Bale and Affleck did is gone. I actually am looking forward to watching it again, if they make more in this style I might get back into "superhero" movies. I'm just about done with Marvel that stuff in hindsight does not hold up well.

I wanna talk about Zoe Kravitz for a minute unrelated to the movie.

She seems intimidating irl, but not in a bad way. I watched her on hot ones and she just has this vibe about her. Throw in the fact that her dad is Lenny Kravitz, a BA, and her former step-dad is Jason Momoa, another BA, AND her mom is Lisa Bonet, it's like she had no choice but to be cool and chill.

how do you know she is cool and chill? do you know her in real life?

I liked Pattisons Batman, his Bruce Wayne sucked. Colin Farrell was great as was Kravits but Dano kinda shit the bed. He’s a much better actor than that but 8/10 overall. Good movie

Ben Shapiro hates it!
Check out his review!
And the sad thing is on some of his points I agree or almost agree with him.

7.75 out of 10

Pros:
-- beautiful music
-- opening montage & batmobile were epic
-- Batman was presented fantastic (the way he operates)
-- great villians

Cons:
-- Huge problem for me; all the questions were solved too easily. If Batman needs to know something, 2-3 minutes later he gets the answer. There's no struggle to find the answer. If you compare/contrast that to True Detective, they take days/weeks/years to get an answer. Here, it just gets laid out in plain dialogue
-- the tone and visuals were over-the-top in its darkness
-- Bruce Wayne was too emo

Nolan's dark knight is my favorite Batman movie and having just watched this new one I want to compare which movie was better in each aspect

Costume: the Batman
Lead actor: the Batman
Villain: dark knight
Supporting cast: dark knight
Writing/story: dark knight
Cinematography: the Batman
Fight choreography: the Batman
Editing: dark knight
Attractive female lead: the Batman
Score: the Batman
Pacing: dark knight

Now you might look at that list and think the Batman is better because it won more categories but that's not the case. In the categories where the dark knight wins, it wins by an enormous margin.

The writing, the supporting cast, and the pacing and editing are vastly superior in the dark knight.

The Batman is way too slow and way too long. I would actually like to see a fan edit because I think they could make it into a better movie just by cutting some shit.

That being said, it's not horrible. I still enjoyed it

Even though anything is possible, I definitely won't think that this movie's runtime is too long.

I've read The Lord of the Rings novels and I've watched the movies. After doing that, I (probably) won't be frightened by The Batman.

Why would I give a shit what Ben Shapiro thinks about movies? Since when are movies his expertise?

I really liked it. thought it nailed the depressing noir vibes from some of the comics much more than prior versions. the actors were solidly cast and worked well together. colin farrell was fucking great as the penguin. as the first building block of a series of films it did a great job to establish an atmosphere and aesthetic. looking forward to see it again.

Yes! Finally someone that agrees Dano's performance was bad. I thought it was just me.

But it seemed way over the top in spots. And I don't even think it's Dano's fault really. The director is supposed to do more takes and direct him to bring it down a notch or make adjustments or whatever. And then he shouldn't use any takes that sucked and I feel like some sucky takes from dano made their way into the movie.

also that scene with the joker sucked. Usually when you have a teaser it contains a cool surprise for the audience. Like the first avengers movie, after the teaser the audience was like "oh shit, was that Thanos? Can't wait!"

But here there was no surprise. We all knew joker has to be a part of a Batman trilogy. So what was the surprise? That he's being played by some random actor? The cool surprise should have been Joaquin Phoenix looking older and saying he's been in Arkham for 2 decades and thinks it's time to break out or something like that.

Yes. Dano was good before he was unmasked. Very creepy character but once he was not in the mask, he was over the top in a Terry Silver over the top manner from KK3. Just too much to take seriously.

And yes to the portion in your spoiler. My guess is they don't even know who they are casting yet so they used some rando and hid his face so he could end up being anyone.

Really enjoyed it. Gave it an 8. Time and researches will tell where it falls in the ranks of Batman movies. My initial reaction is it can't touch Dark Knight, and is probably below Batman Begins, but easily above Dark Knight Returns.

I agree it was long. Thinking about it, they honestly could have cut most of Catwoman out of the movie and it wouldn't have lost a step. Nothing she did was particularly interesting or compelling.

But goddamn, did they nail Gotham City. Even in the Nolan movies, Gotham was more of a relatively normal city but had a criminal underbelly with a lot of influence. This was straight Murdertown. A seedy, rainy, criminal paradise where you practically have to sidestep needles on the pavement.

Dano killed it, imo. The movie almost relied on his performance more than Pattinson's. If he doesn't give off enough creepy, weirdo vibe, it wouldn't work but he nails it.

Best goddamn Batmobile chase yet. Overall the action was the best if the series. You could see Batman is still rough around the edges and his character is still Mile's away from being his best version of himself. That's one of the the things I liked about the movie. He's deeply flawed. Even in Begins, Bale more or less becomes Batman and can do everything that needs to be done. He got fear gassed, but there was no real situation he wasn't prepared for. He was basically "Batman Begins, but also he's totally Batman right now, right away". Which was awesome, it's not a flaw. Just a different take.

Saw it yesterday. I give it a 9.
This one captures Gotham in a way the comics writers described. Loved the rain, the dark grimy feel. They included elements of Year One & The Long Halloween and left open tantalizing possibilities that could be inspired by Hush or Court of Owls.
The Nolan trilogy can stand on its own. As can the two Burton depictions. It would have been tiresome if they just showed the entire origin story again. Instead it wisely jumps into The Batman’s first year, presenting a detective story. Elements of Chinatown with all the corruption, even in family.
The fight scenes were my favorite in any Batman movie. They picked up on the Arkham Asylum games, where he’s fighting off multiple attackers.
The score is great. Using variations of themes for the main characters.
Cinematography captured the dark nourish feel of the story.
Enjoyed all the acting, in particular Farrell and Kravitz.
Love how they left it open that it can go in further directions. Arkham Asylum, Gotham Police Department, The Court of Owls, Mr. Freeze, or even Poison Ivy being a few of them.
I’m exhausted from Marvel & Disney stuff. And not a fan of Snyder, Batfleck et. al. with the huge set pieces. Give me the darker more adult themed DC Warner direction that emphasizes heavy themes and noir settings.

I thought it was absolutely phenomenal. Being a pretty huge Batman fan for over 20 years, this is the movie I've always wanted to get made. Dark, gritty, realistic, yet nailing everything about the mythos. Christopher Nolan got close, but this one was 100% on point. Also, tons of references to the comics for the big geeks like myself yet you can perfectly understand everything in the plot even if you've never read a Batman comic in your life. I loved how much they incorporated Carmine Falcone and Sal Maroni. Not every bag guy in Gotham needs to be a supervillain, some are just Italian mob bosses.
I loved all the references to other villains too.

The Riddler was clearly a mix between the traditional Riddler and Hush. If that wasn't some of Bane's favorite poison (venom) he injected at the end then I don't know what the hell else it could be.
At first I thought the orphaned kid whose dad was killed by Riddler would be the next Robin but he's too young. It's probably gonna be the black kid at the beginning with half his face painted who wanted to join the gang until Batman showed up. That's a perfect Jason Todd Robin, right there.
