The Anime and Manga Thread v48

It is woke because it ignores all the original lore. You don't seem to get what I am saying. They force this diversity for the sake of diversity for this series.
It's based in the world of castlevania it's not a recreation of the games. The games are some of my favorites of all time but they aren't particularly well written. The show calls for creative liberties. It's not like last of us, where we have a composed structured story that deserves to be preserved. We have a amalgamation of games and lore to draw from and compile into something coherent. I think they did a wonderful job, and the show wouldn't be nearly as good if they hadn't deviated. That's my opinion as a big fan of the games and a big fan of anime.

I didn't say that they didn't do a good job. It's just woke. It is what it is. There is a lot of forced diversity and race swapping. I usually find myself arguing that it doesn't make any difference for most cases.

This isn't Castlevania at all. They might as well name it vampire stories and it wouldn't make a difference.

Doesn't matter. It's a pretend anime studio from Texas. Doesn't count. Japan is still relatively based.
I am not trying to be a dick to these people and be like oh it's not even anime. I don't mind transgenders in anime. It's always been part of anime. My issue is taking changing the original source material and changing things for the sake of diversity. This isn't even live action where I can let things slide like oh they need to cast a character.

Sad Dad is saying he hates diversity for diversity's sake but this is the exact case for it. It doesn't mean the story is going to be bad. It's just not Castlevania. It's taking the Castlevania name and selling something that isn't Castlevania. The people who wrote the Netflix series don't play the games or know the lore. They rewrote whole character backgrounds and race swapped people. They even did it for the upcoming season. There is no reason for Anette to be black or fighting slavery. It wasn't in the original story. She is now a powerful sorcerer from the Carribean. This is like the meme of the manga, animation and Netflix adaptation.

I don't know shit about the games. Never played them. Incest assasin twins still doesn't sound woke to me but yea, changing characters to please a younger audience always sits wrong with the older folks. I don't mind, it's nothing new for thousands of years as well. But whatever gets your blood pumping.

And no, I didn't cringe. Alucards sexuality is not my concern. It's up to the writers.
It doesn't matter to you because you don't know about the lore. It is respecting the original source material. It's not even creating a new character. It's just lazily swapping out a character's color or giving them a pronoun. I honestly don't mind if they bring in new characters. Issac and Hector were so different from the source material. They could have just given them new names and it would have been cool.

I see your point. It's a classic but legit one imo. But from my view, all stories change over time and each generation has it's own interpretation.
It was already like that in ancient greek times. The old myths got reinterpretated over and over, the bible, over and over.
Historic science still classifies, for instance ancient greek re-interpretations as legit myths.

I don't mind that. It's also a buisness nowadays and writers have to create content that reflects the Zeitgeist of the biggest potential viewer demographic. They will of course try this and that, some will be rejected like those super woke marvel characters with safe-space powers or over the top shit like RoP.

But yea, I get your point. For me, without knowing the base material, it wasn't "woke right in your face". I enjoyed all 4 seasons for the animation level, brutality, character development, story evolvement. I think the writers did an excellent job making this out of a series of quite old videogames.

I'm rewatching Impel Down arc from One Piece. It's hillarious! Around 15 years ago and Ivankov is forcing people to be the opposite gender left and right.

This story isn't that old. It took characters from 2005 video game. It's just diversity for the sake of diversity. It is what it is. It's not a bad story but it really isn't Castlevania.

Anime fans usually don't like change. Even something like Trigun Stampede wasn't well received. I thought they did an excellent job but it was just too far from the source material.

Well, I liked it.
If it's not well received, writers will adapt aswell. Part of the game. Have a good one!

Is that supposed to be a "gotcha" moment? There are tons of trannies and gays in anime.
Indeed there are. And it's not. I'm not into that "gotcha" shit especially on a karate forum. So i apologize if i came off like that.

I'm more into the phenomena of japanese anime culture, displaying queer shit since forever without ever being called woke. They don't have that struggle, I guess it's simply a solid part of their society and how they display and have to display sexuality.

I'm also interested how so called "stay true to the original folks" would react if, for instance the impel down arc would be rewritten as way less queer in a potential live adaption.

Dude, Bon Clay was my favorite OP character. I could live without Franky(same voice actor). Get rid of Franky and bring Bon Clay back.

LOL! They didn't though. Think of all the canceled woke shows that didn't see s2.
Well, they got cancelled. I just don't believe in any serious agenda. I believe in market as a factor. He-Man was written by mostly gay guys, but it was succesful. Did it change anything for gay people? Straight guys are loving He-Man and complained about the new shit being woke while growing watching a half naked muscleman lifting his sword to get ultimate fuck powers against the evil of death. You can't get gayer in a kids show.

Of course, writers tend to be more liberal and writers act in a bubble but if your product fails you will maybe get one more chance but if that sucks and doesnt generate the desired result you wont be working for that company as a writer anymore.

Agreed! Even tho I love the stupidity in Franky running on Cola. I really thought Bon woould join the crew back then.

"Robots sell toys. Make one."

- Shueisha to Oda (maybe)
Maybe, I like Franky, his "Super" shtick and the reactions he's getting out of Usopp, Chopper and Luffy when he transforms into the most stupid versions of himself. So I think he's a good part of the group. Luffy was into stupid shit way before Franky and written like that. But yea, maybe. I'm more concerned about the exchange of over the top fighting instead of stupid over the top comedic reactions.

I don't know. Usopp was supposed to be the shipwright. Franky didn't bring anything to the crew, imo. They just wanted to put a robot.

the japanese queer/cross dress/trans were viewed as punch lines/comedic relief, they would not make it into american viewing audience these days without major revision.
